FA Vase 3rd Round - Squire's Gate 0 - 4 Staveley MWFC

Staveley MWFC Safely ThroughSquires Gate FC, were disposed of with ease by Staveley MWFC, who cruised into the last 32 of the FA Vase for the second year running with a superb team performance, the 4-0 margin reflected the difference in the two sides.

Staveley, doing what they had been heavily criticised for not doing in recent weeks, worked so hard for this victory and Billy Fox's (left) pre-match rollicking obviously paid dividends.

A string of fantastic flowing moves was, given the state of the pitch due to the recent heavy rain and also the gale force winds, a real feat.

Innocuously, Scott Harries, the Squires' winger, went down injured after just a minute, and the game had an early stoppage leaving the players to keep jogging around to keep warm in the vicious westerly winds whipping in off the Irish Sea.

There were signs that Staveley were on their game, passing the ball around with ease, slick one twos and breaking with pace with Thomas Renfield crudely bringing down Andrew Fox as he passed the central defender with ease - but it was a lenient referee who during the course of the afternoon issued just the one yellow card.

Squires were forced to continue to stop the game with a series of fouls and it was the 12th minute before Richard Patterson's first shot of the game.

Staveley had the first appeals for a penalty turned down when Richard Patterson thought he was tripped when taking on a one-two.

On 21 minutes, Squires did breach the Staveley rear-guard when Bennett Fishwick was played through, his shot well saved by Ian Deakin with the assistant linesman's off-side flag raised - even though the Squires number 8 was well on side.

On 23 minutes a superb move by Staveley brought the 1st goal. Richard Patterson collected the ball in the middle of the park and played it back to Chris Fawcus who turned it back to the Staveley midfielder, who in turn squared it to Gavin Smith, playing a solid midfield holding role all afternoon, who played it down the channel, where Andrew Fox had made a great run and he was pushed wide, but right back Kyle Fores-Chambers had made an immediate run inside and a superb piece of intuition from Andrew Fox saw him play in the right back with an audacious back heel, the resulting superb cross into the 6 yard box found Ryan Damms poaching Staveley's first goal with an excellent 6-pass move.

On the half hour, Scott Harries thrust into the box and Tom Jones' tackle brought some appeals for a penalty but again, the referee waved away those pleas.

Squires gate were beginning to get back into the game and Scott Harries cut in, firing over - but on 43 minutes another superb passing move brought Staveley's second goal.

Chris Fawcus played the ball inside to Richard Patterson who moved it forward to Aymen Tahar. Tahar played it back to Richard Patterson who passed to Ryan Damms who shielded the ball and played it back to Andrew Fox. Again Richard Patterson collected the pass who had a one two with Chris Fawcus who got to the bye line, he put in another great cross into the 6 yard area and Aymen Tahar bravely went in and scored Staveley's second goal with another 10-passing move that was superb to see.

The half time whistle gone it was Staveley who had bossed the game but they would be facing a stern test in the second half as the weather conditions were deteriorating fast.

Two years ago, Squires Gate pegged Staveley back 2-2 and again, Squires looked as if they were up for the challenge in the opening 10-minutes - but Tom Jones and Michael Staley had one of those faultless afternoons, defending well with no real panics.

Staveley thought they had got their third goal when Kyles Fores-Chambers cross was headed goal bound by Aymen Tahar, but Squires keeper David Roberson signed from Lancaster City in midweek pulled off a great save.

On 56 minutes Staveley's third goal did come.

It came about by Andrew Fox's desire to chase down what seemed like a lost cause having being faked by keeper David Roberson taking a gamble in the area with some fancy footwork, his clearance was seized on by Kyle Fores-Chambers whose pass just went too far for Andrew Fox but, he chased centre half Nigel Taylor down and robbed the Squires captain of the ball, squared it to Ryan Damms who deftly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper and the game surely was out of reach for Squires Gate.

If it wasn't then - it was on 66 minutes when another great goal put an end to the competition.

Andrew Fox collecting the ball down the left intelligently picked out Jordan Eagers run into the area and he passed inside to Aymen Tahar who checked, putting Nigel Taylor on the deck and coolly slotting the ball home into the net for Staveley's fourth.

The midfield trio of Fox, Eagers and Tahar had run Squire's Gate ragged as well as doing the hard work off the ball, they were ably assisted by the defensive work of Richard Patterson and Gavin Smith and, with Staveley defending well and Ryan Damms doing his bit up top, it was a superb all round team performance that pushed Staveley into the last 32 of the FA Vase and Monday's draw.
