"We Have To Believe" Spireites' Assistant Manager Tommy Wright

Friday 30th March 2012

We Have To Believe - Spireites' Assistant Manager Tommy WrightIt was Spireite Assistant Manager Tommy Wright who faced the press pre Scunthorpe and he gave us a frank assessment of the Sheffield United midweek game and the prospects against The Iron.

It really has been the 'best of times, the worst of times' this week hasn't it?
"Typical football really - highs and lows. Obviously Sunday was a great achievement for everyone and a great day, then Wednesday was back down to earth with a bang really."

What was the thing that disappointed you most about Wednesday?
"Looking back at the game on the DVD, we didn't play particularly badly, but with the set plays, we switched off and the goals we conceded were very poor - there's no getting away from that.

"The first goal we had when we were running, the second goal - a penalty which was not a penalty, I've looked at it and he's outside the box - and the third we just switch off and you can't do that against a good team like Sheffield United, they've got a quality player in Ched Evans upfront who's scored a lot of goals and cost a lot of money - you can't give them that time and space to score goals.

"If you look at the overall game on DVD and watch it a few times, there were some plusses, but you can't give goals away like that."

The first half was good, it was that 20 minutes that sunk Chesterfield wasn't it?
"Exactly! And when you have a bad twenty minutes, you can concede three goals and if you concede one, you make sure you don't concede again and give yourself a chance and we didn't give ourselves a chance, that's the biggest disappointment really."

An obvious question really, but do you think playing Sunday had any bearing on the result against Sheffield United?

"I think we were a bit unfortunate, that the league were a bit harsh honestly to tell you the truth, making us play on the Wednesday when we could have played on the following Wednesday. I thought that was not a great help to us but I'm not making that an excuse.

"I thought our energy levels were alright, we switched off mentally and that was our biggest problem and the referee got a bad decision wrong - a major decision in my view and everyone else's view - five minutes after half time and it gives them the momentum and they're a talented team. We needed help and we didn't get it."

And it turned the game didn't it?
"Exactly. But that's no excuse for us conceding two goals after it, but it was the decision that definitely turned the way the game went."

And Jack Lester, how's he?
"Jack strained his abductor muscle at Wembley and it's settling down. He'll maybe have a scan later today or early next week and see the extent of it but it will be a few weeks."

It makes the next seven games crucial doesn't it?
"The good thing is though that we're in a situation where we know what we have to do - if there is any good to come out of it - it's that we know that we've got to go and win games and we've got to go and win them consecutively. So it's a simple fact that we have to go and win the next 3 on the bounce - and we are capable of doing that, though it's a tall order - but we've got to believe we can do it or we may as well go home and pack up for the summer."

These are all real '6 pointers' aren't they, if we win these, we knock the opposition on the head too?
"Exactly, we've played all the top teams now and we're playing the teams near us, at our end of the table and hopefully, we can take advantage of that.

"Last Sunday was a great day for everybody, the fans have been brilliant and supported us through and they've really been behind the team and behind the players and the players should take a lot of heart from that. We'd love to get them a bit of reward back, get them a few victories and keep it going until the end of the season - you just never know in football."

Scunthorpe tomorrow, what are you expecting from them?
"I'm surprised that they're so low down, I've seen them on numerous occasions this season and I've come away from the game most times thinking they should have won that.

"They have some very talented players; I know Alan Knill very well, he's a very good Manager and I'm surprised they're in this position but he's had a big overhaul of players and sometimes it can take a bit of time to gel. They're a good side, they'll get the ball down and play football and it'll be a difficult game."

Any injuries?
"Jimmy Juan is improving - he's training and could be around a bit in the next couple of days, Gregor's (Robertson) still struggling - he's not ready for tomorrow, but he's close and will probably train next week. We've spoken about Jack, apart from that everybody's fighting fit."
