The Evans Open As The Spireites Are Beaten At Bramall Lane

Wednesday 28th March 2012

The Evans Open As The Spireites Are Beaten At Bramall LaneSheffield United 4 - 1 Chesterfield

John Sheridan made two changes to the line up starting at Bramall Lane tonight. Both Lester and Ford did not make the trip up the A61 - Lester having sustained what's believed to be a groin strain during Wembley's cup final game on Sunday, and Simon Ford struggling with a knee injury which means that he is unable to play twice a week.

Neal Trotman, who is rapidly proving himself an able leader this season, was back on the team sheet after being cup tied on Sunday - along with Sunday's cup winning hero Craig Westcarr (with his shirt on today!).

The game had been dubbed the first of many 'mini' cup finals for the Spireites, as they begin the fight to stave off relegation and gain as many points as possible from the remaining eight games of the season.

Chesterfield may have had tired legs after their trip to the capital, but were certainly on a high going into the match tonight after their victory over Swindon at the weekend. Sheffield United of course had a weekend off after the game was postponed from Saturday due to the cup commitments.

Chesterfield came out in attacking form, matching the Blades from the start.

The first real chance of the game came on the 25-minute mark when Sheffield United's Lowton fired a volley straight at goal, but Tommy Lee blocked the shot.

Five minutes later, Jordan Bowery's effort shot across the front of goal, followed moments later by an effort from Alex Mendy as a result of a corner from Franck Moussa.

A goal on 37 for the Blades, courtesy of Lee Williamson, left the Spireites deflated, but not for long as Moussa hit back on 43 and levelled the score just before half time.

HT 1-1

John Sheridan made no changes at half time and once again the team began brightly enough, but a twenty-minute spell proved costly for the visitors.

Firstly, a challenge on Ched Evans by Mendy resulted in a penalty for the home side and, once again, the hosts were ahead courtesy of Evans himself.

Minutes later, on the hour mark, Evans got his brace and the Spireites trailed by 2 goals.

Just moments later he did it again, and the Blades number 9 secured his hat trick, leaving Spireites on and off the pitch demoralised.

A triple substitution by John Sheridan in what was doubtless an attempt to add fresh legs to a tiring squad, meant that Scott Boden came on for Westcarr, Mark Randall replaced Allott and Nicky Ajose took over from Bowery on 73.

However, Sheffield United continued to have the run of play and, only a late shot by Moussa in stoppage time created the only real chance for Chesterfield in the remaining minutes of play.

The Spireites remain bottom of League One tonight, and the remaining 7 games of the season become ever more crucial.

FT 4-1

Attendance: 20,159
