Derbyshire Falcons v Nottinghamshire Outlaws t20 Match Report

Sunday 3rd June 2011
by PAUL FISHER

Derbyshire 170-5 (20 overs), Nottinghamshire 174-5 (19.3overs), Nottinghamshire won by 5 wickets.

Samit Patel gave the England selectors a quick reminder that his talents are not to be wasted with a superb knock of 70 to give Nottinghamshire their sixth consecutive win at Derby in the T20 competition.

Patel who was only released from England duty on Friday, also kept up his fine form over Derbyshire, and ensured that the Outlaws will be hard pushed not to reach the quarter finals. It was just Derbyshire's luck Patel was released by the ECB and came back to haunt the Falcons yet again.

Derbyshire managed to give Nottinghamshire a fright, however an ill disciplined bowling display ensured the visitors won in the final over.

The Falcons kept the same side that had won their last two T20 matches, and a majority of the side had played in the four day victory over Glamorgan which only finished on Thursday, a ludicrous decision from the ECB to play County Championship matches in the middle of the T20 campaign.

Derbyshire made a tentative start with only 15 coming off the first three overs for the loss of one wicket. It was Wes Durston who departed for 1 run, clean bowled by Luke Fletcher.

Martin Guptill launched the first six of the game over long on as Derbyshire looked to press on. Chesney Hughes was bowled by former England international, Darren Pattinson, for a very scratchy 4 from 9 balls.

The Falcons seemed to play within themselves in the first ten overs, which also included the loss of Wayne Madsen who had tried countless times to reverse sweep, this time was caught at backward point by Pattinson from the bowling of Patel for 14.

Ross WhiteleyGarry Park then joined Guptill at the crease and together the pair put on 37 before Park was yorked by Andre Adams for 22. Ross Whiteley (pictured left) kept up his recent form with the bat by clubbing a full toss from Steven Mullaney in the 17th over.

Nottinghamshire were guilty of letting Derbyshire off the hook by dropping Ross Whiteley, Andre Adams was the guilty party when the Sheffield born player was just on 18.

Guptill and Whiteley put on 74 from just 38 balls and ensured that Derbyshire gave Nottinghamshire a competitive total. Guptill was cleaned bowled in the final over by Pattinson for a Derbyshire T20 best of 79 from 55 balls. The New Zealander hit seven fours and two sixes.

Ross Whiteley scored a career best T20 score of 40 not out from 19 balls hitting three fours and three sixes.

Opening Nottinghamshire's reply was Bangladesh international, Tamim Iqbal, who was brought in to replace David Hussey. However, Iqbal's debut was short-lived as he spooned an effort to short third man for only 8 when the Outlaws score was only 10.

Notts skipper Adam Voges was next to go in the fifth over, caught by Martin Guptill from the bowling of Wes Durston for 5.

Tom Knight dropped a difficult chance from his own bowling when England Lions hopeful, Alex Hales, was on 26. The very next over Patel was dropped in the deep by Chesney Hughes on 11 at the deep cover boundary with Nottinghamshire on 62.

At the halfway stage, Notts were ahead of the Derbyshire score and with batsmen comfortable. Hales reached his 50 off only 27 balls and celebrated by smacking Hughes for another six runs over long on.

With five overs remaining, Hales was caught by a superb catch from Guptill off the bowling of Hughes for 76. Guptill seemed to misplace the ball in the air due to the floodlights, but gathered his thoughts and clung on to hold the catch.

The partnership between Hales and Patel was 104 and it proved to be match winning.

Riki Wessells was bowled by Knight in the 16th over trying to reverse sweep for 3. Derbyshire then had former England wicketkeeper, Chris Read, caught as he drove to Martin Guptill from the bowling of Hughes for 1. Nottinghamshire then required 27 from 18 balls, and Patel (70no) and Mullaney (8no) saw the Outlaws through to the end to win with three balls to spare.

Derbyshire Head Of Cricket, Karl KrikkenDerbyshire's Head of Cricket, Karl Krikken (left) was quick to point out though that he felt that Derbyshire should have won "Notts are the runaway leaders and we took them to the last over, they needed ten an over and we should have won from there." Krikken was full of praise for Samit Patel though, ”Samit is a good player with a point to prove and managed to get some runs."

Krikken also praised Derbyshire duo Martin Guptill and Ross Whiteley, "Guppy has been superb for us all season, he is a superb professional, whereas Ross has come in and smacked it and it's pleasing that he is another academy player and we're trying to produce our own."
