Chesterfield Panthers Match Reports - 3rd and 4th March 2012

Tuesday 6th March 2012

PANTHERS 1st VX 15 - 14 LONG EATON 1st XV

Chesterfield Panthers Match Reports - 3rd and 4th March 2012A tight league encounter saw Panthers edge the game by the narrowest of margins to consolidate their mid table position with a last minute penalty.

The Panthers took the lead early in the first half with a well worked try from Antony Barnett after good interplay between forwards and backs. Some sloppy defence then allowed Long Eaton take the lead with a converted try but Panthers gradually began to take charge of the forward battle, turning over scrummage and ruck ball on a number of occasions.

This eventually allowed Malc Wellor to ghost through the middle of the visitors defence to touch down under the posts. Barnett added the extras.

The second half saw chances by both sides squandered until Long Eaton grabbed a keenly disputed try with ten minutes to go. The successful conversion gave the visitors the lead 14-12.

Panthers rallied and pressured the visitors into giving away a penalty which Antony Barnett duly converted to give the home side victory.

PANTHERS 2nd XV 48 - 3 LONG EATON 2nd XV

In a game which showed the true spirit of rugby, Long Eaton turned up short of players and Chesterfield lent them some to make a full side.

The result was never in doubt as Liam Charlesworth scored inside the first minute. Tries then came at regular intervals from Karl Hutton, Josh Harding, and Chris Wanford touching down and Chris Cooper kicking three conversions to give a 26 - 0 lead at half time.

Long Eaton got on the board with a after the break but in the main, it was still one way traffic, as a penalty, two tries from Andrew  Macefield, a second for Chris Wanford and one from Chris Cooper plus a conversion from Scott Widdowson completed the scoring.

Man of the match was Owen Johnson.

PANTHERS U17s 5 - 0 MARKET HARBOROUGH U17s

The Panthers team hosted a strong Market Harborough team in the Midland quarter final of the RFU National competition and, on a very wet Sunday morning, both sides produced some good rugby.

From the kick off, Chesterfield gained possession and formed a maul on the halfway line. This was slowly rolled up field until Robert Davison was able to break free and touch down to give Panthers the lead after only three minutes.

The remainder of the half saw continual Chesterfield pressure but no further points came as the visitors defended well.

The second half was touch and go with long spells of pressure from Market Harborough but some valiant Chesterfield defence kept them out and, after 67 minutes of the game at 5 - 0, the final whistle went and Chesterfield had held on to progress to the Midland semi-finals.

Well done to all the players!

DERBY U15s 7 - 52 PANTHERS U15s

Yet another fine performance on a miserable day saw the Panthers boys take the spoils at Derby, with probably their strongest performance of the season.

Tries came from Nick Foan (3), Alistair Taylor (2), Josh Hardy, William Croydon and Ricky Burrell. Taylor also kicked six conversions.

Man of the match was Alistair Taylor.
