Thornton's Double Delight As Staveley MWFC Reach Quarter Finals Of FA Vase

Thursday 16th February 2012
by PAUL FISHER

FA Vase 5th Round, Staveley MWFC 2-0 Oadby Town.

Thornton's Double Delight As Staveley MWFC Reach Quarter Finals Of FA VaseA Joe Thornton double moved Staveley into the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase where they will face either St Ives Town of Cambridgeshire, or fellow Derbyshire club Gresley FC.

Thornton (left) struck in either half to damage the Leicestershire sides hopes of progressing.

Staveley made four changes to the side which defeated Teversal in the NCELP Cup, with Kyle Fores-Chambers, Chris Fawcus, Joe Thornton and the re-signed Ian Deakin coming back into the side following his recent transfer back from Eastwood Town.

Staveley were without playmaker Aymen Tahar who has moved to Romanian Ligue 1 side FC Gaz Metan Medias, the Algerian keeping up his belief that he wants Champions League football.

In the Oadby side was former Leicester and Sunderland striker Matt Piper who left the Foxes for £3.5 million in a move to Wearside, however his professional career was finished after a series of injuries.

The East Midlands Counties side almost took the lead inside the first two minutes when Jake Duffy shot over after a poor clearance by Chris Fawcus.

Staveley then hit back when lovely work from Joe Thornton down the left saw Jordan Eagers fire over when well placed to score. Thornton was becoming a menace to the Oadby wings, delivered an inch perfect corner to Ashley Foyle who broke clear of his markers to hammer his header against the crossbar.

Staveley should have taken the lead when Thornton burst down the middle only to be clipped by Elliott Shillian and referee Matthew Bristow gave a penalty. Ryan Damms stepped up to strike the spot kick, however Shillian dived correctly tho his right and pushed the ball away, Shillian then superbly saved the follow up from Thornton.

Welfare were not to be denied when on 41 minutes, a corner from the right by Andrew Fox saw Thornton in space and he fired his shot through a crowd of players and into the back of the net.

Staveley started the second half in fine form when a corner by Thornton saw Tom Jones head wide when well placed.

Staveley doubled their lead on the hour mark when, for once, a poor clearance by Shillian, fell straight to Thornton who shot into an empty net.

The Welfare cruised through the remainder of the half, by giving Oadby plenty of possession, however the central defensive partnership of Jones and Foyle saw off any danger that Oadby had.

Staveley Manager Billy Fox was delighted with his side's performance, especially after the loss of Aymen TaharStaveley Boss Billy Fox (left) was delighted with his side's performance, especially after the loss of Aymen Tahar, "I'm impressed with the way we coped without Tahar, we competed well. We started to give the ball away after missing the penalty and hitting the crossbar, it seemed to give us a dip in confidence, but we scored at the right time."

Fox was right to raise the performance of Thornton and his 2 centre halves, "I thought Joe was excellent tonight. He's doing really well, it was a super 2nd goal, it takes something to clip the ball back in after a poor clearance from their keeper who had kicked brilliantly all night. Jones and Foyle put in a man's performance. They are better than this level, some of their headers were going 30 and 40 yards."

Fox doesn't mind who they get in the next round, "Both sides will be difficult, no easy teams in this round, but we have home advantage, Gresley would be well supported in an all Derbyshire clash."
