A Million Reasons To Tackle Youth Unemployment

Thursday 17th February 2011

After figures released yesterday showed more young people aged 16-24 are unable to find work, one youth charity is calling on Chesterfield business leaders to help tackle youth unemployment in the area.

With youth unemployment at its highest since records began, The Prince's Trust is appealing for local businesses to sign up to a major regional fundraising campaign, aiming to raise thousands to help local young people into jobs.

The Million Makers - fundraising with the Prince's Trust'The Million Makers' fundraising challenge will see businesses from across the East Midlands competing over six months to raise the most money for The Prince's Trust by setting up their own mini-enterprises.

Teams from companies across the region will compete to turn an investment of £1,500 into a profit of at least £10,000.

All funds raised will directly support unemployed young people into jobs across the East Midlands.

Since its launch, the no-cost Million Makers Challenge has proved popular with companies wanting to hone teamwork and leadership skills whilst raising their profiles.

Jackie Tyler, The Prince's Trust East Midlands Regional Director (acting) said: "By building relationships with their communities and the local media, companies can raise a vast sum to support young people into jobs.

"Million Makers presents fantastic staff development opportunities as well as being a worthy fundraiser, so we are urging new companies to get involved and help us surpass last year's fantastic achievements."

An information evening is being held on Tuesday 8th March at Chartwell in Derby, based at Pride Park on Brunel Parkway.

And ... here's the science bit - last year, The Prince's Trust helped more than 3,500 young people in the East Midlands, giving them the skills and confidence to find a job. These young people will be supported through courses to improve skills and confidence, grants for community projects and business start-up support.

Last year, more than three in four young people supported by The Prince's Trust moved into work, education or training.
