A Win For The Iron Throws Chesterfield Into The Fire

Saturday 31st March 2012

It was billed as the game that the Spireites needed to win in order to begin the fightback against relegation - they were 9 points adrift going into the game - Spireites Assistant boss Tommy Wright told us pre game, that they know what they have to do, and that's win hopefully as many as six games from the remaining seven.

Manager John Sheridan made just the one change to his starting line up, bringing in Liam Ridehalgh for Nathan Smith, who dropped to the bench today.

The home fans spirits were lifted when the JPT made its first appearance at the b2net - paraded round the pitch by four of the youth team.

Chesterfield certainly came out in fighting spirit with Jordan Bowery once again proving to be the most dangerous in the opening minutes.

For the first twenty minutes it had felt that the goal for Chesterfield was coming, and sure enough, on 20, Craig Westcarr (above) fired the opening salvo and the home team was in the lead.

The euphoria in three sides of the ground was soon quelled though as within 7 minutes, Robertson fired one past Tommy Lee to equalise for the visitors.

As expected from a game with so much at stake, it was a tightly fought and quite fiercely contested first half, with tempers simmering on and off pitch but, at half time, the teams went in level pegging at 1- 1. However, a battling Spireites eleven definitely had the run of play and the better chances.

HT 1-1

Neither side made any changes to the teams at the start of the second half, and no real chances either up to the hour mark.

One notable incident led to Drew Talbot, perhaps the most tenacious of the squad, clutching his back just short of the 60 but seeming to run it off soon after.

But on 64, Scunthorpe went ahead, courtesy of Josh Walker.

And soon after, John Sheridan made a double substitution, with Mark Randall on for Mark Allott and Nicky Ajose replacing Alex Mendy on 72.

It made little difference though, with another goal from Robertson doubling the Iron lead - with another shot just seconds later just whizzing past the net, much to the relief of Spireites fans in the stadium.

Within minutes the scoreline got worse for Chesterfield as Andy Barcham hit in another making it 4-1.

Nathan Smith was brought on to replace Neal Trotman with just under 10 minutes of normal time left to play but it didn't make any difference as the visitors proved stronger during the second half.

FT 1-4

Chesterfield sadly now have it all to do, with only seven games left to play and 10 points adrift as it stands tonight.

Attendance: 6,152
