Derbyshire 133-5 (20 overs), Northamptonshire 134- 3 (18.3 overs)

Derbyshire Falcons were denied a place in the T20 Quarter Finals in their penultimate match with a dismal display against the Northern Section’s lowest side.

The Steelbacks had only won one match prior to the match at the County Ground, but found an inspired bowling and fielding display to defeat the Falcons. Johan Botha was left unbeaten on 54 to see the Steelbacks through to victory.

The Falcons had slim hopes of reaching the Quarter Finals even with wins in their next two matches, and they didn't start off the brighter against the Northern Section's lowest side.

Wes Durston was caught behind by David Murphy from the bowling of Jack Brooks off his first delivery with the score on 6. Greg Smith followed the next over leaving a delivery which hit his pads and he was also out following his first ball.

Derbyshire struggled to cope with some fine Northants bowling and fielding, and this was epitomised by Wayne Madsen run out backing up. Martin Guptill drove the ball straight to Andrew Hall who immediately released the ball and threw down the stumps at the non striker end.

Derbyshire's leading T20 run scorer, Martin Guptill, was struggling to make a big impact, and when he did hit out he got out after launching a ball straight to long on with the score on 44. Guptill had made 27 of those off 34 balls.

Chesney Hughes failed again with the bat, caught behind by Murphy from the bowling of Willey for 5 in the 12th over. This brought Ross Whiteley to the crease along with the pacy Garry Park (pictured left).

These two put on an impressive 82, with 67 coming off the final 5 overs. Park brought up his 50 in the final over. Park hit four fours and one six off 46 balls. Whilst the big hitting Whiteley scored his second highest T20 score of 39 off 26 balls with one four and two sixes.

Derbyshire closed their innings on 133-5 which was a defendable total, at one stage Derbyshire were threatening to eclipse their lowest of 81 scored against Lancashire last Sunday.

Derbyshire dropped Rob White's second ball of Northants innings. Chesney Hughes had been placed at slip and White drove Jon Clare's second ball and the stretching Hughes could only palm it away with damage to his hand which he received treatment for.

Next over, Martin Guptill (pictured left) showed why he is one of the world’s best fielders, a flying catch when Murphy drove Mark Turner with the score on 10.

Northants then set to work on the Falcons total with some ease, scoring at around 8 an over to be way ahead of Derbyshire's comparative score.

Rob White's 50 came up in the 15th over off just 43 balls with seven fours.

Former South African One Day captain, Johan Botha, showed his true class by bringing up his 50 with a big six. Botha's score coming off 44 balls with four fours and one six.

White's innings finally came to end when he tried to drive a ball outside off stump and was caught by skipper Luke Sutton from the bowling of Mark Turner for 51. White and Botha had put on 109 for the second wicket.

Mark Turner cleaned bowled Alex Wakeley for a quickfire 14 and Derbyshire's disappointing finish was shown by the winning runs coming from a Falcons No Ball with an over and a half to spare. 9 wides contributed to the defeat as well and it makes next week's tie versus Yorkshire Carnegie a dead rubber.
