Last Gasp Winners Sees Staveley MWFC Through To Next Round In FA Cup

Thursday 16th August 2012

Last Gasp Winners Sees Staveley MWFC Through To The 2nd Round - Match ReportStaveley MWFC 2 - 1 Old Hall Rangers
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

For the third game in a row, Staveley MWFC went behind to an opposition opening goal and twice they have clawed their way back in to the game to pinch victory from the clutches of defeat.

That is something that will hardly give the supporters of Staveley MWFC a great deal of confidence that the team is the finished article because clearly, to coin a phrase, "this is a work in progress", with 6 or 7 new faces in the camp from last season.

On Saturday, yet again, Staveley put in a game of two halves, the first half going in 1-0 down and then in the second half asserting their authority on the game getting back to 1-1 and then winning the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Tie in the last minute of injury time.

Staveley were rocked on their heels after only 4 minutes. A harshly awarded free kick against Staveley, one of many free kicks to be given when play was close to the assistants but not being flagged as infringements, resulted in Hall Road taking a quick advantage and Joe Cooper, unchallenged some 35 yards out, looked up and struck a looping shot into the bottom corner to take a 1-0 lead.

Staveley didn't panic, and tried to 'pick pocket' their way through the visitors defence with Scott Ellis managing to get Staveley's first chance on goal.

Then a sloppy pass out from the back was collected by Jamie Barnwell, playing it back to Martin Thacker who pinged a great ball through where Hall Road's winger clipped the ball past the advancing Rob Poulter, some 30-yards out of his goal, but the ball went agonisingly wide, much to the delight of the Staveley followers.

Neat inter play nearly opened up a chance for Richard Patterson to burst through, but Hall Road just managed to get in a toe end to stop the runner bearing in on goal.

Staveley won a free kick just right of centre, some 22 yards out, and Andrew Fox thundered one just wide of the target.

Hall Road were working hard, all 11-players behind the ball and relying on the break.

A slick one-two between Scott Ellis and Simon Barraclough ended with a shot from Scott Ellis, but Hall Road's keeper gathered it well.

This was decent stuff from Staveley, a great one-two between Jordan Eagers and Scott McGrory would have been a terrific goal, but Jordan Eagers effort was saved for a corner.

Hall Road were opened up again with Simon Barraclough and Andrew Fox combining with some good work but the final effort was tame.

Again Hall Road were facing neat pass and move football giving Simon Barraclough another chance but his shot was saved again.

Time after time, Staveley carved up Hall Road but that elusive final touch and strike on goal was just not there. Hall Road went in 1-0 up but much against the vast majority of possession that Staveley held.

HT - 0-1

Hall Road had a similar second half early chance as they did in the first, with a ball over the top, keeper Rob Poulter well advanced again, but the Hall Road winger rather theatrically fell to the ground looking for the foul knowing his toe poked effort was going out wide for goal kick.

Staveley deservedly drew level on 52 minutes. Richard Patterson advancing down the right and into the area, played in Jordan Eagers, who slipped the ball in to Simon Barrclough, who's great thinking and quick feet set up Eagers who took one touch then calmly side footed the ball into the corner of the net for a very well taken goal.

Scott Ellis made way for Kyle Hawthorne on the hour as Manager Billy Fox tried to freshen things up on what was a very hot and energy sapping day - and Ellis was straight into the thick of the action with a shot just wide of the mark.

Staveley again had a chance with Simon Barraclough working hard as he played it inside to Andrew Fox who fed it to Jordan Eagers but his shot was tipped around the corner for another Staveley corner.

The pattern of the game was simple, Hall Road sitting back looking for the quick break and counter attack, whereas Staveley passing and moving the visitors around, looking to open up the defence with precision.

Kyle Hawthorne's through ball to Simon Barraclough on 65 minutes looked to have undone Hall Road but again, the keeper denied them for yet another Staveley corner.

With 20-minutes to go, Joe Thornton came on for Ryan Damms as Staveley went looking for the winner their play had deserved.

The Hall Road captain can think himself very lucky to have been given complete liberty by the referee David Midgely, as a clear elbow-lead challenge through the back of Kyle Hawthorne's head didn't even muster so much as a yellow card, yet again showing the inconsistencies by officials.

The game had been played 75% in the Hall Road half, with the visitors sitting back showing little or no desire to release the 8 or 9 men sitting behind the ball at anytime. It was therefore absolutely just that Staveley should nick the winner in the 94th minute of play.

A series of corners surely promising to produce something - and they did - Andrew Fox swinging in a right footed corner for James Colliver to head home from close range.

FT 2-1

A passage through and £900 in to the Staveley coffers was thoroughly deserved.

It is always hard when teams are prepared to sit back and counter, both Worksop Parramore and now Hall Road Rangers have come to Inkersall Road, soaked up the pressure and tried to nick a point or so.

Staveley must have opened up Hall Road on a dozen or so occasions and in reality, the scoreline could have been a huge margin.

As it was, a 94th minute winner was enough and now, in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, it's Bamber Bridge from the Evostick North League, a side that finished 10th in their league last season.

Before this next tie, there are 2 NCEL games, one at home to Nostell Priory and then a trip to Barton Old Boys in midweek.
