Chesterfield Market Rents Set For The Coming Year

Wednesday 6th March 2013

Market traders and Chesterfield Borough Council have agreed a deal which will see rents on the markets increase by 1.5%, as approved by members of the Borough Council's cabinet yesterday morning.

Market traders and Chesterfield Borough Council have agreed a deal which will see rents on the markets increase by 1.5%, as approved by members of the Borough Council's cabinet yesterday morning.

The increase will come into effect from 1st April and will affect all stalls on the general market, flea market, farmers' market and car boot sale.

This increase has been discussed and agreed following consultation with market traders; the council's original proposal saw an increase rents by 3%. This means market rents have increased by only 1.5% in the last three years.

The shortfall will be met by savings from the markets budget.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council's Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism said: The traditional open air market is a reason many visitors come into Chesterfield and is a great place to find fresh, local produce and craftsmanship.Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council's Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism (left) said: "The traditional open air market is a reason many visitors come into Chesterfield and is a great place to find fresh, local produce and craftsmanship.

"Despite the economic climate and competition from large shops, the number of traders on the market has remained stable.

"We want to see this continue and we were able to work with traders to agree a small increase in rents to help meet our costs of providing the market but also allowing them to continue to trade."

Paul Hind of the Chesterfield Market Traders Association added: "Many traders are suffering in this recession and a rent increase of 3% would have seen some traders consider the number of days they could afford to stand on the market.

"But working together with Chesterfield Borough Council, we have been able to agree a rate that will allow us to carry on trading."

An increase of 1.5% will also be introduced on all storage charges but councillors have decided not to increase electricity and publicity charges in 2013-14.

The Borough Council will work with the Markets Consultative Committee to develop a three year business plan which will incorporate annual rent increases.
