Chesterfield Puts The Spring Back In The Bank Holiday

Monday 20th April 2013

Chesterfield town centre is set to come alive with music, dancing and comedy this spring bank holiday.Chesterfield town centre is set to come alive with music, dancing and comedy this spring bank holiday.

On Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May, there will be a market and table-top sale in the town centre market place. Fun for children will be provided by an open-air circus skills workshop, an art and craft table in the market place and giant bubbles and balloon modeller.

As part of Love your Local Market week, adults can experience life as a market trader.  A stall at the table top sale is only £8, giving them an opportunity to make money for their unwanted goods. Entertainment will be provided by the rock and roll band, The Buddies. Many of the town's shops will also be open during the weekend.

Bank Holiday Monday also sees the annual Procession of Witness around the town centre.

Chesterfield's famous Whit Walks are believed to be the largest in the country. The procession of more than 25 churches of all denominations includes decorated floats and tableaux, marching bands, giveaways from balloons to bibles, clowns and the latest Christian rock music.

Once the procession has left the Town Hall at 10 am, it follows a route into town along Knifesmithgate, Cavendish Street, Newbold Road, Queen Street, Tennyson Avenue, Rose Hill West and back to the Town Hall for singing. There will be entertainment, band music and refreshments both outside and in Eastwood Memorial Hall on Rose Hill.

The theme for the procession this year is 'Jesus is alive'.

St Mary and All Saints' Church, the famous 'crooked spire', will be open between 11am and 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday. Visitors can experience breath-taking views of Chesterfield from the top and learn the history behind the 228 foot crooked spire.
