Chesterfield FC Stars Kick-Start Project To Stop Hate Crime

Tuesday 30th November 2010

A Chesterfield project, aimed at helping people with learning disabilities to recognize and report incidents of hate crime, such as bullying, harassment and anti-social behaviour, was last night at a glittering ceremony in London, after being nominated for a prestigious national award.

The 'Keeping Safe' project, which has been pioneered by the Macintyre charity in partnership with Safer Derbyshire, began in September 2009, launching officially this week at the B2net Stadium with the full support of Chesterfield Football Club.

Now RADAR - the UK's leading pan-disability charity working to represent over 11 million disabled people in the UK, has short-listed it for the RADAR People of the Year Awards 2010, in the Stop Hate category.

Following a number of pilot workshops there are now twelve 'Keeping Safe Champions' - all of whom have learning disabilities themselves and have been specially trained to assist in the running of further workshops.

The Chesterfield Post spoke to Neil Abdy, the training and development officer for the project just before the awards ceremony. He told us about the project and how it has developed over the last year.

They were, he said,"Asked to do this by the group Reps on Board after they identified the need; they came up with the idea of a project that would look at hate crime and the address the issues from it. By July 9th, Keep Safe Champions had been trained."

Statistics show that only 25% of crimes are reported, which Neil believes is down to a fear of not being listened to, saying,"This is a national statistic which is mainly due to people not having confidence in reporting things and having confidence in the fact that people will do something about it.

"They need to know that someone will do something about it, that other agencies can help - that's where we come in, helping people find the help they need so they can report it with confidence. It's under the surface in Chesterfield, we need to get out there and for people to know they can come forward and talk to us about these issues."

Chesterfield Football club have thrown themselves behind the campaign, with several players - Tommy Lee, Mark Allott and Danny Whitaker - attending the launch, along with Keeping Safe Champions, Members of Reps on Board, supporters and trainers.

CFC community director John Croot said: "It is reckoned that only 25% of hate crimes in the County are actually being reported so this new 'Keeping Safe' project, has been set up to tackle these difficult issues and the football club wants to give it as much publicity as possible."

Neil Abdy is very grateful for the support of the club, commenting, "We want to thank Chesterfield FC for getting behind this important initiative as we have a clear message to all people with learning disabilities that support is now there to help keep them safe."

He added: "We also want to raise public awareness about these difficult issues so anyone who is behaving inappropriately can be challenged."

UPDATE...

Yesterday we brought you news of this initiative, backed by Chesterfield Football Club, that helps those with learning difficulties to combat hate crime.

The 'Keeping Safe' project was nominated for a prestigious award in London last night after starting up only a year ago.

We were told today that, sadly, the project didn't win but was awarded a 'Highly Commended' certificate for their work by the judges.

Neil Abdy, Training and Development Officer with the project says that he was "Very pleased with that, we were all, even those who couldn't attend the ceremony, very happy that we did so well."

The snow meant a nightmare journey back for the team - they finally returned home from the capital at 6.30 am this morning!
