"Back To The Top" - Chesterfield v Torquay Utd - A Fan's View

Monday 13th December 2010
by Paul Fisher

Chesterfield returned to the top of the table with a convincing victory over Torquay United at the B2net stadium.

Jack Lester's 6th goal of the season in the 28th minute of the first half, settled the tie by firing past Gulls keeper Scott Bevan from a Drew Talbot cross.

The Spireites on balance deserved the win, only a second half chance from Jordan Bowery saved by Bevan prevented Chesterfield from scoring more and Torquay really only had one long range effort from Derby born Kevin Nicholson, which resulted in a fine save by Tommy Lee.

It was a comfortable workman like performance by the Spireites and John Sheridan was correct in his statement regarding "The three points being the main thing".

Both sides lacked the extra spark, which could be down to the fact that neither side had played for two weeks, therefore they missed that extra bit of fitness at the cutting edge.

Gregor Robertson put in a sterling performance at left back, matching himself against a dangerous player in Chris Zebroski. Gregor has looked good and sharp since his comeback from the terrible broken leg injury in November last year. The Scotsman was making his 100th club appearance since his signing back in the summer of 2007, and he will be remembered in Spireite folklore anyway, as a man who scored from a corner against arch rivals Mansfield Town.

John Sheridan went with an experienced back four in Ford, Mattis, Breckin and Robertson who have between them played over 1100 league games.

They largely contained a useful, but mainly ineffective, forward pairing of Elliot Benyon and Eunan O’Kane. There have been calls to get Mattis back in to the centre of the park but to me that should only be a change if the midfield all of a sudden sees a lack of personnel again.

Full credit must be placed with the experienced Jack Lester, who I felt had a superb match alongside Jordan Bowery. This season, Lester seems to just be there at the right moment with the final ball and the final pass largely coming from him. He might not have scored many goals this season compared to a couple of seasons ago but if he gets to 18 this season, then he will have averaged 20 goals a season since he joined us from Nottingham Forest. Lester currently has six, it would not surprise me for him to get those remaining twelve.

For a game that was in doubt for much of the week, the pitch played perfectly.

Credit must go to the groundstaff and volunteers who made the game playable - and the surrounding areas were mostly clear thanks to the overnight thaw.

It was however, the lowest attendance at the B2net, under 5,000 there with a smattering of support from the South Coast. The reasons for this will largely be unknown, but we are hitting a period of economic downturn with Christmas popping its head up pretty soon.

The cash tills will be registering mainly in the shops, rather than buying tickets to see Chesterfield FC which is perfectly understandable at an expensive time of year.

Two home games over the Christmas and New Year period though may change that, with a Wycombe side flush in promotion confidence and a Stockport team who can attract large away followings, so I would like to think that the crowds will be back to their usual 6,000 plus.
