Guptill Powers Falcons To A Queens Park Win

Wednesday 17th August 2011
by PAUL FISHER

Derbyshire v Yorkshire - Yorkshire CCC 234-7 (40 overs), Derbyshire CCC 238-4 (33.4 overs), Derbyshire won by 6 wickets.

Martin Guptill fired 106 to power Derbyshire Falcons to a Queens PArk win over YorkshireThe Chesterfield Festival of Cricket got off to a cracking start at Queens Park with a crowd of over 3,000 witnessing a Derbyshire victory. The Falcons won by 6 wickets with a wonderful century by Martin Guptill (pictured left) finishing 106 not out.

Wayne Madsen captained the Falcons in the absence of Luke Sutton, with Tom Poynton keeping wicket. Yorkshire were rocked by usual skipper Andrew Gale picking up a knock in the nets, so Joe Sayers was brought into the side, to open the batting with Jacques Rudolph.

Yorkshire won the toss and opted to bat on a straw coloured pitch with runs in mind, Derbyshire were hopeful of the overcast conditions that greeted the lovely Town Centre ground.

Yorkshire made an explosive start with Sayers launching Wes Durston over long off for six in only the second over. The Tykes were in confident mood and brought up their 50 within 8 overs.

The Falcons gained the breakthrough in the 11th over when Sayers was caught by Poynton down the leg side from the bowling of Garry Park for 23.

Yorkshire brought their 100 up in the 17th over and with only 1 wicket down looked well placed to post a big score. Adam Lyth was bowled by Greg Smith in the 19th over for 16. Anthony McGrath's disappointing innings was brought to an early close when he was caught at long on by Garry Park off the bowling of Greg Smith for 6.

Jacques Rudolph's delightful innings was brought to a close in the 30th over when he was stumped by Poynton, from the bowling of Tom Knight for 75. Rudolph's innings had come from 81 balls and included eight fours and one six.

The Batting Powerplay was taken in the 34th over, which immediately brought the end of Gerard Brophy who skied a ball from Groenewald to Chesney Hughes at extra cover. Derbyshire had put the skids on the Yorkshire batting, but that was all about to change.

Adil Rashid and Gary Ballance the former Derbyshire player, both hit Mark Footitt for huge sixes, especially Ballance's which cleared the deep square leg boundary.

Ballance breathed a sigh of relief when Poynton missed a stumping when on 57 from the bowling of Wes Durston, the Zimbabwe born player then promptly hit Durston for six next ball.

In the 39th over, skipper Madsen put down a difficult chance off Rashid which didn't prove too costly as the England prospect was out next ball, caught by Guptill on the long off boundary for 17 off the bowling of Garry Park.

Ballance kept up his fine hitting, and launched Tim Groenewald for two sixes in the final over of Yorkshire's innings. David Wainwright was sacrificed next ball trying to gain two runs and he was run out following a long throw by Garry Park from long off.

Ballance was dropped off the final ball of Yorkshire's innings by Tom Knight and Yorkshire closed on 234-7 with Ballance not out on 81.

Ross WhiteleyDerbyshire's reply got off to a cracking start with Guptill and Hughes scoring at a rapid rate, and Derbyshire brought up their 50 within six overs. Hughes' luck didn't last though and he was caught at deep long on by Hannon-Dalby off the bowling of Wainwright, who had a very short spell at the County Ground earlier in the season.

The Falcons brought their 100 up in the 13th over. Wes Durston (20) was clean bowled by Adil Rashid with probably the best ball of the day.

Madsen and Smith both fell cheaply, but Derbyshire cruised to victory with Ross Whiteley (pictured left), the former Chesterfield CC player, using his knowledge of the ground to execute superb shots. Guptill brought up his 100 in the 34th over, his 81 ball hundred included nine fours and four sixes.
