Work At Water Treatment Works Causes Local Stink

Tuesday 14th June 2011

Thousands of householders in Chesterfield have received letters through the post after work to upgrade a wastewater plant has taken longer than expected and caused a high degree of unpleasant odour in the surrounding community.

Work at Old Whittington Water Treatment Works causes local stink

Work began to refurbish the sludge digesters at Old Whittington Waste Water Treatment Works (above) in December and was expected to take 5 months to complete. However, Yorkshire Water has said that, due to the severe weather during the winter, work has been delayed.

Local residents have complained after the smell from the plant became increasingly noticeable, particularly during the recent spell of warm weather. They say that Barbeques have been spoiled due to the smell from the works, and that simple things like dog walking in the local park have been ruined.

Owners Yorkshire Water have now, in conjunction with contactors ETM, written to all households in the surrounding villages and admitted that odour levels have "Increased above anticipated levels" but assured residents that work is being done with officers from the Environment Agency and local Environmental Health department to try to tackle the problem.

Yorkshire Water say that though the scheme was never intended to improve the odour from the works, the improvements made to the sludge digesters will mean that sludge will not be standing for long periods of time and will therefore reduce the risk of odour.

They are inviting local residents to a customer drop in session to be held at New Whittington Primary School on London Street, New Whittington on 15th June, 4-30pm - 6.30pm where plans for the plant can be viewed and members of the project team will be available to answer any questions
