'Fatal' Road Accident On Infirmary Road

Thursday 22nd November 2012

Three young students were killed and one paralysed, after a collision outside Chesterfield College on Infirmary Road.

Another student, the only one to be wearing a seatbelt, did survive the crash, and is back at home recovering.

Fire crews, Police
and Ambulance personnel battled at the scene in the dreadful weather conditions to free the teenagers for over half an hour...

Actually, there was an accident yesterday morning but thankfully, it was an exercise staged by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, in conjunction with other emergency services, to highlight the need to make safer choices when driving.

It's a shocking statistic, but every year, 150 young people are injured on North Derbyshire's roads - this does not include passengers, or other road users involved in collisions.

Dying 2 Drive is an annual campaign run by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, along with the College and other emergency crews

Dying 2 Drive
is an annual campaign run by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, along with the College and other emergency crews, to try to drive home the message to teenagers that they can reduce those figures by the choices they make when inside a car.

To that end, yesterday morning, 6 students played their part in showcasing this message taking the roles of drivers and passengers of 2 cars - a black Fiesta and a green Volkswagen Passat - modified by automotives students.

The emergency teams that attended were real however and dealt with what they saw as if it were a real incident. Most of the 4,000 students at the college and staff watched as the events unfolded - with the incident being relayed around the college in an attempt to make sure that every student accessed the message.

They saw 'victims' being cut from the wreckage and treated at the roadside - and watched as the 'dead' were placed in body bags, all to illustrate graphically the cost of driving recklessly.

Public Service students, the police, fire and ambulance crews of the future also had their part to play - and will be assessed on their response to the accident as part of their course.

Tim Binns, Curriculum Manager for Public Services, said that it was a hugely important day for the college, It's fantastic, it's an opportunity for the Fire Service and the Dying2Drive campaign to really hit home the message of the awareness of speedTim Binns, Curriculum Manager for Public Services, said that it was a hugely important day for the college, "It's fantastic, it's an opportunity for the Fire Service and the Dying2Drive campaign to really hit home the message of the awareness of speed - the awareness of young people and trying to reduce the number of people in RTA'S.

"It's also an excellent day for the college, an opportunity for a whole load of students to get the vocational experience they need. Our public service students are in charge of the event and there are not many young people who can say that at 16 or 17, they have taken charge of a major incident.

"This is industrial training, vocational assessment. It's what happens at a RTC and it's the message that they are getting - that 'I need to slow down'.

"We're very proud of the students. It's a collaboration, a real life event that can engages all students across the college, the IT dept, the Emergency Care students, the Public Service students, the Automotive department and the beauty department too. It's a test for my group - if they do not want to go into a public Service career after this, they never will!"

Matt Lee, Station Manger for Fire and Rescue Service agreed that the exercise was vital in getting the message across, saying, "It's massive for us! We work with partners, really trying hard to reduce the amount of dead and serious injuries on our roads - and we are doing that - but we still have a disproportionate amount of young drivers involved in, or causing, serious accidents, so this represents a fantastic opportunity to engage with a wide audience of young drivers and make them think about the decisions they make when they get behind the wheel.

"The core message is four single statements - if you're going to drive -

  • Wear a seatbelt
  • Don't speed
  • Don't drive when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Don't use your mobile phone, or other distractions when you’re driving.

Driver James, who would be looking at a sentence of 14 years for each death, having been convicted of Dangerous Driving, said that it had been a valuable and thought provoking experience for him"A serous road accident is devastating for lots of people, the immediate families, the emergency services, the doctors - the missing seat in the college from someone who isn't coming back."

Driver James, (left) who would be looking at a sentence of 14 years for each death, having been convicted of Dangerous Driving, said that it had been a valuable and thought provoking experience for him, "It's taught me that no matter what, you can't be distracted when you're driving.

"I'm not a driver yet but I have thought about my behaviour when I do.

"It's scary when you're in there and watching everything going off around you. When the handcuffs go on it's surreal and frightening.

"Make sure you wear a seatbelt and take no chances so this won't happen to you."
