Will The 'Glovers' Be Off For The Spireites

Friday 27th April 2012

There are now just two games left in the 2011 /2012 campaign and as the Spireites travel to Yeovil for the last away game this time around, they know that once again, three points is vital to their challenge to remain in League One next season.

Looking dead certs for relegation just a few short weeks ago, four wins on the bounce has given the squad a shot in the arm and everything to play for.

Of course, it's true that results from other teams will also be pivotal to their chances, and no matter how exciting the game, everyone will have one nervous eye on the Walsall result. They take on high-flying Huddersfield at home and could spoil the party for Chesterfield still.

Yeovil sit comfortably safe in 16th place and on paper, have nothing to play for, but that may not be any comfort for the Spireites tomorrow as they face a side which has itself fought back from the brink since December when they were hovering in the danger zone.

Ahead of the team travelling South, Coach Mark Crossley brought us up to date with squad news and the feeling in the dressing room ahead of another crucial game for Chesterfield.Traditionally on the last away trip of the season, travelling Chesterfield supporters don fancy dress and party. Let's hope the fat lady costume has not made the trip to Somerset and, come 5pm tomorrow, the party is a celebration, not a wake for League One.

Ahead of the team travelling South, Coach Mark Crossley (left) brought us up to date with squad news and the feeling in the dressing room ahead of another crucial game for Chesterfield.

So once again, a game of two halves Saturday?
"There wasn't much said at half time apart from keep going, not much was going to plan and the Manager turned the system around like he did at Hartlepool but the way we played against Wycombe, with the three midfield we thought 'why change things' and so we kept it the same, kept the same team but it wasn't working and then credit to one of the players I keep going on about lately, Danny Whitaker - he came on and changed the game for us, so credit to him again and credit to the Manager for making the change at the right time."

And of course both subs scored so, the right subs at the right time?
"It was yes. It's difficult when things aren't going well in the side and obviously, you have to make an instant decision and the Manager usually confers with Tommy (Wright), and sometimes myself and that decision was made that we had to change it and it worked. On some occasions it works and on others it doesn't - this time it did."

Ironic isn't it that for weeks we've talked about relegation and almost assumed it was a given. The pressure came off because of that, the points started to come and now you're back under pressure chasing points from every game to stay up?

"They are - deep down we've always believed that - until it's mathematically possible that we'd be relegated, that we'd keep going. The hard thing was to get that into the players, but the players have responded brilliantly and that's all we could have asked from them and they've responded well.

"We don't want them to feel the pressure at Yeovil - we just want them to go and do exactly what they've been doing, but one thing that they're sure they've got to do is win the game - we have to go out and attack and play attacking football."

Does it make it less, or more pressurised knowing that, whatever you do, if Walsall win, you're down?
"Yes, but I think if we do win, I can't see that happening personally. I think if we win on Saturday, it'll definitely go into the last game and that's what we have to install in the players minds, come 4.50pm, if we've won the game at Yeovil, we'll be in with a great shout of performing a miracle and staying in the league."

How is Simon Ford because he came off with an eye injury?
"We had a look at Fordy yesterday - the swelling's gone down but he's got a little bit of blurred vision, so he's doubtful, we can't risk it and obviously, when it's a head injury and your eyes are involved, you've got to take real precautions. I spoke to Simon yesterday and he would like to give it his best shot, but I can't see it."

And Neal Trotman?
Neal is out for the rest of the season and obviously, we've got Jack [Lester] but apart from that, Gregor [Robertson] came in for Simon and slotted in perfectly and he'll just fit in perfectly. Gregor's one of these players, cool, calm and collected - you know what you're getting from him, he never lets anybody down and I think barring his injuries over the last couple of years, he could have been a massive player for us. When he has come in for us he has been a massive player for us. It's difficult to come off the bench and perform like he did in such a pressure game on Saturday, but we know what we're going to get from Gregor and everyone at this football club knows, so no problems at all there."

It's been easier for you having a consistent team of late too, as that's what you've struggled with all season really isn't it?
"Yes, but when you're winning games, it's very difficult to change it - even though it wasn't working at Hartlepool in the first half and at Rochdale in the first half, the Manager decided to go with the same team that started in each game - maybe a bit of superstition involved, but it's been working. Sometimes when you change a system, it upsets the other team a little bit because they've done their homework on you, so the system has been changed in the second half and we've gone on and won the games."

Yeovil, this week - if you win, you're one point away from safety...
"Well credit to Yeovil, ever since Gary Johnson's gone in there - they looked dead and buried themselves. They are safe and people are asking the question 'have they got anything to play for' but as professional footballers, I've been in the situation myself where you've been in mid table but when it comes to Saturday afternoon, you get paid to perform and I'm sure there's players at Yeovil who are out of contract and want to impress the Manager, whether it be this game, the last few games or the last game. Looking at their result last week, they definitely haven't given up, so that's the answer - to equalise in the 94th minute is a credit to them."

What are you expecting from them game wise?
"Well, Chief Scout over there Paul Mitchell, has watched them on a few occasions, against Rochdale - you know they try to play football - they'll be in a relaxed mood and trying to express themselves better. I think credit has to go to their Manager, he's turned it around."

Watching his player interview last night he was saying that Chesterfield are a good side with a good manager - they're certainly not underestimating you, in fact other Managers have said the same all season after games. Is that frustrating given the way the season has gone?
"It is! Very! Because we know that ourselves, we said that after the Wycombe game, we were surprised they were above us in the league and Hartlepool second half, a mid table team, on the day we were the better side so again, it's just frustrating. But, the table doesn't lie. At the end of the day, points haven't accumulated and that's down to us. It's alright saying 'you're too good to go down' but that’s never the case. Unless you turn it on on Saturday afternoon - all the preparation during the week goes out of the window."

But it's not over yet?
"It's not, we're still in with a fighting chance and long may it continue."

Any more injuries that we've not talked about?
"No everybody's fine, everybody will train this morning that's expected to train apart from Simon Ford, Jack and Neal. Apart from that, we're all fine."
