Fans Forum At Chesterfield FC - A Report

Tuesday 8th May 2012

"We're here tonight to discuss the future, but also a little bit of the past!"

We're here tonight to discuss the future, but also a little bit of the past! - Dave Allen speaking at last night's fans forum at Chesterfield FC's B2net stadium

That was Chesterfield FC Major Shareholder and Owner Dave Allen (above) as he opened the Fans Forum held at the B2net Stadium last night.

After a frustrating season all round which has of course ended in relegation back to League Two, the evening was a chance for fans to pitch their questions to Dave Allen, Manager John Sheridan and Chief Executive Chris Turner and a chance for them to communicate with the fans directly.

The evening was a long one but thought to be productive and incisive on both sides, with questions from the floor answered by the panel in turn. Questions ranged from pitch related matters, to business and finance queries and all were responded to fully by the relevant member of the top table.

There were several big announcements made during the evening, though it was made clear that the retained list or possible signing targets would not be named until the relevant people had been spoken to and terms agreed personally.

Manager John Sheridan, in answer to many questions directed at him, told the crowd of around 300 that last summer had been a difficult time for signings of the quality that he had wanted. He confirmed that he had offered both Danny N'Guessan and Donaldson deals, but both chose to gp to Championship clubs. He also conceded that this season he had used too many loan players and made too many changes, which he said emphatically, was not something he would choose to do normally.

He confirmed that the retained list (there are 15 players out of contract) will be out later today and that efforts are well underway to sign targets of quality and that work will continue relentlessly to achieve this.

CEO Chris Turner also confirmed to the room that efforts had been made since Christmas to sign strikers, but that they had gone to the Championship.CEO Chris Turner (left) also confirmed to the room that efforts had been made since Christmas to sign strikers, but that they had gone to the Championship.

The Manager also responded to questions regarding Jamie Lowry and his lack of appearances in the squad by strongly denying that the player had been 'mistreated' by anyone and that when he arrived at the club three years ago, he had felt that Jamie was the player that would be sold for a lot of money, but after his horrendous injury, he hadn't reached the potential shown.

He went on to say that Dean Morgan was a player of ability, but his attitude had been a different matter and that he had played for 10 clubs at least in his career. He felt he said that Dean had not shown the right attitude despite several one to one conversations.

John Sheridan has been noticeably absent from touchline and media of late and this was a subject of discussion at the meeting. He said that he felt that as the team had won 3 out of those 5 it was a superstitious move and he had, on all those 5 occasions, given the team talks before, during and after the match and had been present in the dugout at all times.

He conceded that one of the issues this season had been his loyalty to players, and he said that would not happen again.

Dave Allen came to Chesterfield as major shareholder in 2009 and confirmed last night that he will indeed take over as Chairman of the club after Barrie Hubbard's departure. He affirmed his commitment to the club announcing that £8 million of his own money is currently tied up within the structure, with some loans assured against his business.

He strongly refuted suggestions from the floor that b2net had become more of an entertainment venue than a football club, making it clear that the conference and banqueting facilities earned over £300,000 a year and helped considerably in financing the on pitch services.

Asked about the sale of Saltergate, he confirmed that none of the £1.7 million earned would go towards loans, but would indeed go towards servicing the loans. He also expressed surprise that it had fetched less than expected.

Manager John Sheridan conceded that one of the issues this season had been his loyalty to players, and he said that would not happen again.Asked about his public backing of the manager despite the season, he was again emphatic that Manager John Sheridan (left) is the right man to take Chesterfield forward saying that he had set a target of the top 3 by Christmas. He told the floor that he had a good Manager and a good CEO and that's what the club needs. There was surprise around the floor when he announced that he had invested a further £92,000 of his money into loan players since Christmas alone.

"The playing budget next year will be" he said, "commensurate with anyone in the top 4 of League Two and will once again be in the region of £1.4 million". Priority signings have been identified and will be a 20 goal striker, a Midfielder and a quality Centre Back to play at the side of Neal Trotman.

The squad will be no more than 22, 2 Goalkeepers and 20 outfield players and will include the 3 youth signings.

"There will" said Dave Allen, "be no loan players this season." Tommy Lee will not be going anywhere for less than £200,000 and a suitable number 2 Goalkeeper has been identified.

CEO Chris Turner talked about the Centre of Excellence within the club and conceded that clubs everywhere were experiencing difficulties due to the new EPPP regulations. The whole system could cost as much as £400,000 in total.

He affirmed that the last player to come through the youth set up and earn money for he club was Kevin Davies in 1997. He also talked of plans to bring the Centre of Excellence back into town as opposed to Sheffield where it is currently based. However the difficulty with facilities and the new plans make that impossible. The first team he said were the priority and all funds need to go to keep the first team as strong as possible.

Chris also confirmed that agents fees would be paid in situations where it was deemed appropriate to secure the services of a player, though he accepted it was a difficult situation.

The 3 hour session ended at 11pm and the consensus by all parties was that it had been a successful evening.
