Derbyshire Delight In The Rain - T20 Match ReportDerbyshire Delight In The Rain - T20 Match Report

Derbyshire Falcons defeated the Lancashire Lightning via the Duckworth/Lewis method at a damp County Ground with Wes Durston winning the Man of the Match accolade.

This was Derbyshire's first win over the Lightning for six years at the Derby venue - and their first T20 win in six home games.

Derbyshire won the toss and chose to field with rain heading towards the East Midlands. Australian test batsman Usman Khawaja made his second Derbyshire debut and his first T20 appearance , he lined up alongside T20 specialist Rana Naved.

The Falcons grabbed an early wicket when Tom Smith drove Tim Groenewald to mid-off, when Naved took his chance to shine.

Naved came on to bowl in the fifth over and was immediately dispatched by Stephen Moore for two fours and two sixes which cost the Test bowler 21 runs.

Tim Groenewald kept up his fine opening spell the very next over, by having Stephen Moore caught behind by Tom Poynton, Moore's innings of 34 came off 21 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

Derbyshire were guilty of dropping Karl Brown twice, Usman Khawaja spilled his chance when Brown was on 11 and Hughes followed suite, however the Anguillan opportunity was rather more difficult diving to his right close in when Brown was on 25.

Eventually Hughes atoned for his error by catching Brown off his own bowling.

Rana Naved then went for two more sixes in his next over, which by now had gone for 38 runs. David Wainwright, then had Paul Horton caught behind, to grab his first wicket for the Falcons in T20 matches.

Naved, then came back on and conceded a further 17 runs and was promptly switched ends by skipper Wayne Madsen to the City End.

Naved then did superbly well to run out Gareth Cross, the Lancashire wicketkeeper drove the ball straight at the stumps which broke, and Naved quickly realised Cross was still out of his ground and lifted one stump out of the ground with the ball in his hand.

However, Naved was then hit for a further six taking his own personal tally to five.

Mark Turner, who had bowled a quick pace through the game hit Stephen Croft on his helmet which went for four leg byes, one ball later and Croft scooped the ball to Madsen at Mid-off and Lancashire closed on 168.

Naved went for 56 off his four overs which was three runs short of the worst bowling figures for Derbyshire in their T20 history.

In Derbyshire's reply, Usman Khawaja fell in the third over when he was caught behind off the bowling of Yasir Arafat.

Man of the Match Wes Durston kept up his fine form with the bat by hitting former England bowler Sajid Mahmood for two fours and a six Wes Durston (left) kept up his fine form with the bat by hitting former England bowler Sajid Mahmood for two fours and a six before being caught at point by Croft for 31.

The Falcons kept in touch with the D/L rate which only comes into play after five overs of the second innings.

Derbyshire then lost steady wickets with Madsen being caught down leg-side from the bowling of Procter. Ross Whiteley, who had been timing the ball well, was clean bowled by Stephen Parry for 24.

Dan Redfern, who was only making his second T20 appearance in four years, was caught at point second ball and Derbyshire were then dropping behind the rate.

Rana Naved joined Chesney Hughes and the run rate increased, Naved who hit his first ball for four off Procter, then did the same to Parry and the unfortunate Mahmood. The Lancashire paceman went for 17 off a six ball over, still with three balls left to play after two wides and no-ball. One of the wides also went to the boundary, quite was has happened to Mahmood's bowling in recent times is something of a mystery.

The Umpires took the players off the field of play at 9.17pm, where the obligatory half an hour was waited, before coming to a conclusion when time defeated the remaining overs and Derbyshire had won by the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Derbyshire will be pleased with parts of their game tonight, the bowling - apart from Naved - was excellent, the ground fielding was superb, apart from two dropped catches, and the batting, was at times explosive, although they did lose too many wickets.

More positives than negatives at the start of the T20 campaign, bodes well for future matches including the next one at Trent Bridge on Friday.

Man of the Match: Wes Durston

Lancashire 168/6 (20ov)
Derbyshire 118/5 (11.3ov)

Derbyshire win by 17 runs (D/L Method)
