Maltby Main 3 - 1 Staveley MWFC

Staveley created enough chances to take a point from this game but ultimately, Maltby's experience and better finishing saw them take all three points on a warm afternoon.

Staveley manager Neil Cluxton (left) welcomed back Joe Bytheway and Joe Barrett to the starting lineup, whilst Sean Dickinson was promoted from the substitutes bench after his goal when he came on against Lincoln Moorland Railway. Barrett was giving the difficult job of keeping the experienced Brian Cusworth quiet which he managed for most of the game.

From the kick off, it was obvious that Maltby's tactic was to play long high balls to Brian Cusworth and the big number nine would then lay the ball off for his colleagues, including ex-Staveley striker Adam Houghton. To repeat a well known phrase, "It may not be pretty but it can be effective."

Staveley started the better of the two sides and Michael Trench had a good shot that the Maltby keeper had to be a full stretch to save.

Maltby then started to enjoy the lions share of the possession and Staveley in particular, were unable to compete in midfield.

Staveley goalkeeper Danny Herring had to be alert to save from Adam Houghton and then Brian Cusworth, before Maltby opened the scoring on 29 minutes when midfielder Oliver Graham was not closed down and got a shot in from outside the area that should have been kept out.

Staveley nearly equalised five minutes before half time when Joe Barrett saw his powerful header from a corner superbly saved by the Maltby keeper.

A few minutes later, Barrett played a great long ball to Sean Dickinson but the diminutive midfielder pulled his shot wide.

HT: 1-0

Staveley came out and played some good football early in the second half as they sought to get back in the game. However, as often lately, they didn't look like creating many goal scoring chances and the closest they came was when Lewis Jackson had a penalty appeal turned down.

As the hour mark approached, Danny Herring made a great save to thwart a Maltby attack before Brian Cusworth made it 2-0 with a header from the resulting corner, on 57 minutes, that the defender on the line was unable to keep out.

However Staveley's heads did not drop, Ashley Emson and Staveley Man of the Match, Joe Barrett (left) dealing well with the many long balls that were played in their direction.

This attitude was rewarded on 72 minutes when Ryan Damms set up Lewis Jackson who beat the Maltby keeper with his shot.

Jackson then came closest to equalising on 80 minutes when he was fouled and won a free kick on the edge of the 'D'.

He got up and took the free kick himself but the keeper did well to parry and Andrew Fox was just unable to get onto the loose ball.

Staveley continued to push forwards and substitute Lee Anthony was close to getting on the end of a good cross from Ryan Damms.

Unfortunately, Staveley do lack that killer touch in front of goal at the moment and they were made to pay when Oliver Graham scored his second from a free kick, albeit with the help of a deflection that took the ball out of Danny Herring's reach.
