Two Countries, Two Visits, One Goal. German Football Comes To Chesterfield

Tuesday 14th May 2013

Pics by Barry Dyke

As we reported last week HERE, Staveley MWFC U13s hosted a big reunion last weekend - with a team they played a year ago in Aachen, Germany called S.C Grus-Weiss Lichtenbusch 1949 e.v.FC.

Lichtenbusch (GWL)
returned the favour this year, making their first trip to England to play the return fixture, with 57 in their party, aside from coach and chief-organiser Jan Buchsteiner, the coaches and a few parents, they brought a 20 strong each U13/14 side and an U15/16 side.

But in this day and age of overpaid, over-pampered egos in football and the unsporting behaviour and spoiling tactics that we are constantly bombarded with on TV and in the press - what a fantastic advert for the game we had this weekend between not only young footballers of the future, but between young lads of different cultures, languages and backgrounds.

After arriving on Thursday evening last week, the German party had Friday sightseeing, taking in the sights at Old Trafford during the day until arriving in Chesterfield to play Brampton's U13/14s and U15s.

The two age groups played their fixtures simultaneously on Brampton's pitches side by side, with the Germans grabbing a solid win against the youngsters while the 15/16 year olds fought a close game, Brampton eventually coming out on top 2-1.

To relax and catch up with old friends from last year, they were then taken for a meal at the Star of Sall on Sheffield Road - bringing traffic to a halt when they pulled up in their huge double decker coach and turning what was a quiet evening out for some of the diners, into a mass party as around 70 people squeezed into the restaurant.

The main event however was saved for Saturday.

First thing in the morning, a match had been arranged, courtesy of HTM Kitchens, for the Staveley U13s to play their 'return' fixture on the pitch at the PROACT Stadium - an end of season treat for the lads and a great surprise for GWL.

The U13s had a few 'guests' in their team as they had one eye on Sundays Sheff League Trophy Cup final and Coach Neil warned they would all only get half a game before the 'guests' took over.

The match was played in a fantastic spirit, the German U16s making an incredible noise cheering on their young counterparts

The match was played in a fantastic spirit, the German U16s making an incredible noise cheering on their young counterparts (above), as well as some rousing choruses of 'Sta-ver-lee, Sta-ver-lee, Sta-ver-lee' and 'Chest-er-field, Chest-er-field, Chest-er-field' - orchestrated by Jan - making the Proact sound like there was a much bigger crowd than the couple of hundred that were actually there.

The score was almost irrelevant, more about the event itself, but the competition was fierce, GWL looking to avenge their defeat by the U13s last year.

A couple of 'ringers' were introduced in the second half, young future pros Josh Scully and Charlie Dawes played on the English and German sides respectively, to a huge roar from the German U16 supporters.

Eventually the score ended 3-2 in Staveley's favour.

So that's now 2-0 to England!

(l-r) Sheffield United U21 and Italian Youth International Diego De Girolamo, alongside future pros (and shared 'ringers') Charlie Dawes and Josh Scully, presented the medals at the Proact

After the game, there was a bite to eat, speeches and time for presentations of medals and trophies from Staveley and commemorative hoodies from GWL, before they went on a roam around Chesterfield town to see the sights and do some souvenir shopping (perfume and crooked spire souvenirs all round for the girlfriends back in Aachen!).

Late in the afternoon came the final part of the visit, a trip to Staveley MWFC's ground at Inkersall Road for the U16s game on the main pitch (below) - again played in a very competitive but fair atmosphere.

However, Staveley's U16s are a formidable bunch - and so it proved as they ran out easy winners - although it's unlikely the Staveley boys had travelled quite the distance that the German boys had in the previous 48 hours, nor played the evening before, eaten a curry, stayed up all night talking (Jan told us everything lads!!!), got up early to travel from Edale to the Proact, shouted their lungs out for an hour or two then wandered in the rain around Chesterfield town!

Despite the result, there followed a wonderful evening of easy camaraderie, good food, drink and more presentations and speeches, pennants swapped and pictures taken to bring the visit to a wonderful conclusion - with everyone agreeing that this will be repeated again, hopefully next year back in Aachen, Germany, as had been pretty much already decided before the weekend began.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop a real and solid foundation for a future 'exchange' of youngsters each year between Staveley MWFC and SC GW Lichtenbusch, after the amazing bond that has developed between the two teams in the last two years.

As the title says - Two Countries, Two Visits, One Goal - "In Freundschaft" - "In Friendship"!
