Chesterfield Market Steps Back In Time To Sample The Medieval Life

Wednesday 30th July 2014

Queen Elizabeth was in Chesterfield yesterday - though sadly for royal watchers, it was Queen Elizabeth I rather than our current monarch!Queen Elizabeth was in Chesterfield yesterday - though sadly for royal watchers, it was Queen Elizabeth I rather than our current monarch!

Her Majesty (left), was, like thousands of visitors, taking in the annual Medieval Market - a fun family day which also enables charities to promote their activities and spread their message.

The event with a medieval theme is organised by Chesterfield Borough Council and many stallholders on the open-air market were in fancy dress, selling goods and running games for children.

Entertainment on offer for residents and visitors included Medieval musicians on the market place, an alchemist puppet show and Troop marches through the market place.

Trolls and beggars were also spotted walking through the market on what proved to be a warm and sunny day for the event.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Cllr Alexis Diouf and his wife Vickey-Anne, (below), were on hand to greet visitors and even man their own charity stall for the Mayor's Appeal.

His Worship told us he couldn't believe the atmosphere which was already building as the event began at 10am, "It's a wonderful day to see all these people raising funds for charity. People have come here from all over the UK. I've already met people from Gloucester, Loughborough and Manchester, it's fantastic. The weather is wonderful - it couldn't be a better day than this!

"It's brilliant to keep the tradition. People of Chesterfield are proud of the tradition and we have to make sure we uphold it. To see all these people raising money for their charities is wonderful. I'm proud to be here."

The market was packed with charity stalls, with every area of life represented by charities which included RSPB, Bluebell Wood, Fairplay, Nenna Kind and the Deaf and Hearing Support service (below) who give free information on all aspects of deafness and hearing conditions.

One of the tasks facing the Mayor later on in the day was to choose the best dressed stall and stallholders.

This year the title was won by The Soroptimists, (below) who had all dressed in medieval finery to raise their profile.

They are a service organisation supporting women and girls and Linda Moore told us, "We support groups locally and internationally. Locally, we support charities such as Women's Aid, Young Carers and Fairplay. We're not a fundraising organisation, we're a service and we do need money to be able to provide these.

"In August, we take a group of young people to Lea Green and we give parcels to Women's Aid. We also run a scheme called 'Knickers for Knowledge' which helps young women who are menstruating to continue to go to school in Africa. Just four pounds supports them for a year!"

Elizabeth Hoult added, "We've done the Medieval Market for many years and we always try to enter into the spirit of it! This year Linda has made the costumes for us!"
