On The Road Again...

Tuesday 25th January 2011

In what's hoped will be a shorter and less eventful journey to and from the Priestfield Stadium table topping Chesterfield are on the road again - this time for a mid week fixture against 8th placed Gillingham.

It's a rearranged game; a rescheduling of the planned 18th December clash that was postponed after the Spireites had travelled down to Kent, due to icy conditions.

Deteriorating weather conditions on the motorway journey home meant that a normal 4-hour trip took 15 hours, with John Sheridan and his squad not arriving back at the B2 Net till the early hours.

The teams have locked horns many times before, with The Gills gaining bragging rights from previous encounters, winnng 28 to Chesterfield's 18.

However, with the Spireites having only lost once away from the B2 NET so far this season, hopes are high that the three points will be coming back up to Derbyshire tomorrow morning.

The last meeting between the two was way back in 2009 when the Gills picked up the three points home and away that season.

Andy Hessenthaler's team head into tonight's game on the back of a 1-1 draw against Torquay on Saturday, when they pulled one back three minutes from the final whistle.

John Sheridan's lads of course picked up a valuable point after a 0-0 draw away at Shrewsbury. They now sit three points clear at the top and, with second placed Wycombe's next game not scheduled to take place till next Tuesday, top spot should still be theirs today win, lose or draw.

Gillinghams Assstant Manager, Ian Hendon is not fazed by The Spireites, telling Gill's fans ahead of the game, "We've had Chesterfield watched and if the boys go out again and do what they have been doing then we are as good as anybody in this division. It's going to be a squad game over the next few weeks and we had a few knocks out there today.

"It might be the case that we go with two up front or it may stay the same. Anything could happen but we're not going to give too much away. There are plenty of players waiting for their opportunity and I'm certain that anybody that comes into the side will be chomping at the bit to play."

His opposite number at the B2Net, Tommy Wright, is going into the game confident but not complacent after sitting in top spot for a number of weeks, saying, "They have some good players who have played at a higher level. One threat comes from Cody McDonald who has settled in well and is scoring goals.

"You always come under some pressure away from home like on Saturday at Shrewsbury and we coped well. We are an attacking team and will want to make them defend as well."

He reports that there are no new worries on the injury front, "We have a few bumps and bruises but our bench is looking strong if we want to make changes".

Kick off tonight at 7.45

Referee - Darren Drysdale
