The Spireites Train In Style

Thursday 19th July 2012

Today, as normal, Chesterfield's footballers trained. However, unusually, this took place in the grounds of Chatsworth House after a personal invite from the Duke of Devonshire, now the first ever Patron of the club.

The Spireites Train In Style
John Sheridan and the Chesterfield FC team are welcomed to Chatsworth's South Lawn by the Duke of Devonshire

The first team, management and staff at the club, arrived just after 11am and trained on the private South Lawn, which offers stunning views of the House and Fountain.

Some lucky visitors were fortunate enough to also come across the players' training session and watched from the sidelines, along with members of the Duke's family.

Luckily the rain which had been present all morning cleared just in time for the session in front of the assembled media.

During the event we caught up with all the main parties and they shared their thoughts on the day and also filled us in with developments over the summer.

The Duke told us that he was very happy to have the team there training this morning - and that it hadn't caused too much stress for the Groundsmen who were responsible for the lawn...
"We talked to them before we confirmed this and they were very relaxed, though we didn't realise it was going to be this wet, but it'll grow again. We have huge lumps of sculpture coming in and out over the year and that's much more damaging than footballers."

How difficult was this to organise? No-one needed much persuasion I'll bet?
"Some one suggested they might come and train at Chatsworth and I said why don't they train here on the lawn - it's flat and it's got a nice view and I hope the players enjoy it. It makes a break for them and indicates our support for Chesterfield, that's the least we can do."

Is it the first time you've had football on the lawn?
"At this level, yes. We've probably had a kickabout, but more cricket than football, but when we were younger, our children played football on it every day - not this sort."

Is it the first time you've had football on the lawn?

Were you a footballer yourself?

"No not at all, I'm no athlete. I quite like rowing, but you can sit down doing that - still hard work, but sitting down is easier!"

Will you be able to attend many games this season?
"Yes I'm sure I will go once or twice, I don't know when, but I'll go later on in the year. I check on the club's website and get the results. I'm not too bothered about the higher divisions, although my son supports Arsenal, so we keep an eye on them. It's interesting now - it's all change at the top and it's exciting with several teams at the top. It's an exciting business football - at the top level and internationally - and I follow it as I follow all sport, but I don't know much about it."

And of course this year you'll be following as Club Patron...
"Yes, which is exciting. It's a great honour to be Patron and it's very nice to keep the family connection. My father was very much involved and it's very nice they want me to continue. I think it means I'm a sort of figurehead and it makes it easier for them to ask if they can come and train here! It's a great honour and I'm delighted to be involved."

Will it be a one off?
"Let's see how this goes, if they don't all get sprained ankles because this is the wrong type of grass! I think it will lovely to have them again, it's great to see football going on here. One of the things we tried to do here is to do something different quite often, we've just never had football."

We were saying earlier what a beautiful place we are in - what was it like growing up here?

"We didn't live here until I was 13, but it was wonderful, the most beautiful place in the world. A wonderful view to wake up to, a wonderful part of the country, a wonderful neighbourhood and Chesterfield is just down the road!"

the attraction for players of the stadium itself, the training ground and the management team, that's why we have managed to beat off stiff opposition for the players.
Chesterfield FC's Management and Coaching team

Chesterfield CEO Chris Turner told us that he was thrilled to be there with the team...
"It's a brilliant day for Chesterfield FC, a brilliant coming together of two organisations that are only 10/12 miles apart and you wouldn't think it when you're standing here that, only ten miles down the road is Chesterfield and it's football club, so it's fantastic surroundings for the players to come along and train in."

Did you do anything like this as a player?
"I can't recall it, or really being brought to such a fantastic setting to train in, no."

There can't have been many pre seasons done on a lawn?
"Well no, if it had been a normal lawn, it would have been quite firm, but I wouldn't like to be the groundsman after the training session today, but it's a fantastic setting with the House in the background."

How did this all come about?
"We got a new media dept and Nick Johnson, who heads that, thought it would be good PR for both companies and rightly so, that's why we're here today."

How does this prepare you for some of the pitches in League Two?
"A lot of pitches are good, they're not like the old days where they were muddy - they're quite well manicured pitches these days."

There is a serious point to today though - training is now well into the swing for the season...

"Yes, we're well into the second week and we have a game at Staveley on Saturday, the first prep game, then Matlock, then we start to move into some more serious opposition with Huddersfield and Derby. The season is only a few weeks away from us now and it's getting quite exciting."

It's obviously been a long Summer for you, you've not had much of a break, getting people in?
"John (Sheridan) recruited well this Summer, but the signings that we have brought in, we've had heavy competition from other clubs for, but we managed to get them. They've all got experience of playing in the Championship and League One, so we're very optimistic for the coming season."

You've beaten off other clubs to sign these players, that says something about the club...
"That says something about the management team that we have and John in particular. He plays good football, attacking football and lots of goals and I'm sure we're going to get that again next season and the attraction for players of the stadium itself, the training ground and the management team, that's why we have managed to beat off stiff opposition for the players."

There's been a lot of money thrown about in League Two this season, the likes of Fleetwood for example - will this be a harder campaign this time around?
"It's always hard and there's always someone who'll be putting a lot of money in the squads. It doesn't mean you're always going to more successful, but it does help if you're bringing in better quality footballers, but we feel we'll be competitive with any other club in this division."

There have been a lot of changes over the Summer on and off the field - the club has a sense of having a new lease of life?
"Well I think that's important, I came in seven months ago and took stock of certain areas of the club where I thought we needed to make changes - and media was one area where we felt a change was required. We wanted a fresher direction. The people who worked here before did an excellent job, but we felt that now the time was right to go in a different direction and give Chesterfield Football Club a bigger PR focus and I think starting with today, it certainly has."

One of the things last year was the fans forum which was really successful - are there plans to do another?

"There will be a fans forum at certain times. It's always difficult when relegation has just come your way, but hopefully the next one will be when we're at the top of the league and heading for promotion."

And Manager John Sheridan was also delighted to be at Chatsworth...

A fantastic opportunity isn't it?

"Yes obviously it was lovely to be offered the chance to come, it's a beautiful place. It's a little bit different, but the lads appreciate the offer to come down and just have a workout and enjoy it whilst we're here."

Is it good in the middle of the hard slog of pre season to have something a little bit different like this?

"The lads have worked constantly for the last 12 days and I'm really pleased with the way things are going at the moment, so to come down and do a little bit of core work in these surroundings is something new to us and we'll enjoy it."

Have you done anything like this before?
"Well a Duke has never offered me the chance to do this - friends in high places! It's a generous offer and we are looking forward to it. It's a beautiful place and the first time I've been here, so it's something new to me as well."

How's pre season going? You have a lot of new players in, it's a different squad...

"Yes, it's a smaller squad, we're trying to get everyone as fit as possible and keep everyone fit for the first game of the season, that's the most important game."

It's a smaller squad but you've added some real quality...
"Yes, I'm really pleased with the players I've brought in. They've all been Captains at the clubs they've played in and I think that's important to take that on to the field and hopefully, they'll get a grip of each other, as I think that's something we missed last season, so hopefully they'll do that. They've fitted in very well."

As you say, they've all been Captains, what made you choose Sam Hird to be skipper?
"I tried to get him last season on loan, but he was playing too well at Doncaster. He's played at Championship level for two years and has a lot of experience, but he's a young age. He's a player I've always admired and I've tried to get him on a couple of occasions."

One thing you missed last season was Craig Davies' goals, you have Marc Richards now, hopefully he will provide you with that?
"Marc has proven in the last three or four years that he can score in the twenties, so Marc will come in but he'll have to fight for his place in the team. Just because I signed him, doesn't mean he'll go straight into the team, I do think I've got players, Westcarr, Bowery, Boden, Lester, who I believe will score goals next season - between the five of them, they will score goals next season."

You were despondent at the end of the season - have you got over that?
"No not really! I was disappointed - I wanted us in the first division, I wanted us to improve. I'm really pleased that I've won two trophies whilst I've been here and I really did think we were gaining momentum and improving, but to get a relegation is very disappointing on my part and I don't want it to happen again. I want us to get out of the league, straight away - have a successful season and be a solid team in League One next season - that's what my aim is."

Do you think it may be more difficult than it was two years ago?
"I think the players who are going to clubs in this league, some teams are going to be strong. I think there'll be 10 or 12 teams that think that they can get out and we have to think we're one of them. It's more important that the players think that though, we have to be in and around there and it will be a difficult season, there are good teams and good players, but I feel we're strong enough to compete with most of them."
