Classy Khawaja Delights Chesterfield Festival - Match Report

Sunday 15th July 2012
by PAUL FISHER

Derbyshire v Unicorns, CB40, Queens Park, Chesterfield. Derbyshire 235/7 beat Unicorns 200/10 by 35 runs.

Usman Khawaja's first century for Derbyshire in limited overs cricket gave the Falcons their first victory in this competition since the last time they played the Unicorns in MayUsman Khawaja's (left) first century for Derbyshire in limited overs cricket gave the Falcons their first victory in this competition since the last time they played the Unicorns in May. Derbyshire, with no chance of getting through to the quarter-finals were looking to obtain the winning habit again as they face a top of the table clash with Yorkshire on Wednesday.

Mark Turner registered back to back four wicket hauls to give his side victory. Derbyshire made one change to the side which played at Northampton in a rain affected game, with young wicketkeeper Chris Durham being replaced by loanee Richard Johnson. The Unicorns fielded former Derbyshire loanee Tom New and former trialist Steven Cheetham in their line-up.

After being put into bat, Derbyshire looked at ease with Chesney Hughes and Khawaja looking very comfortable, Hughes in-particular looking to bully the attack. The Anguillan brought up his 50 in the 19th over, an over that also included the 100 partnership.

Khawaja reached his fifty in the 21st over, Hughes was eventually out, despite being dropped the over before by Reece, caught at cover by Beaven from the bowling of Wadlan for 66. Their partnership of 138 was the highest partnership of the season in List A games for the county.

The Australian brought up his hundred in the 34th over before being bowled around his legs two overs later. Khawaja's innings of 106 was his second century for the county, after hitting three figures in a county championship match versus Kent last season.

Derbyshire then had something of a collapse with Madsen, Redfern and Park all going cheaply trying to get quick runs. Jon Clare and Wes Durston hit two big sixes before both being out LBW, as the Falcons closed on 235/7.

The Unicorns replied by taking on Mark Turner and dispatching him for 30 off his first three overs, with Wadlan hitting the quick bowler for three fours' from his first over. The Unicorns replied by taking on Mark Turner (left) and dispatching him for 30 off his first three overs, with Wadlan hitting the quick bowler for three fours' from his first over.

Derbyshire made the breakthrough in the eight over when Jon Clare trapped James Ord LBW in his first over for 14. Three overs later and Wadlan tried to sweep Wes Durston and was caught by David Wainwright at mid-off for 29.

Tom New was next to go for the Unicorns when he was caught behind by Johnson trying to cut the ball off the bowling of Wes Durston for 31.

Keith Parsons, the Unicorns skipper, was run out after facing only two balls, when he was called through for a single, and Clare quickly picked the ball up at backward square and Durston took the bails off at the non-strikers end.

Craig Park was dropped off his first ball by Johnson behind from the bowling of Wainwright.

Derbyshire were beginning to put the squeeze on, and with the Unicorns needing 9 an over, Mark Turner clean bowled Craig Park for 15. Tripathi hit a brisk 11 before driving Turner into the covers where the grateful Madsen took the catch.

Khawaja nearly topped off an impressive afternoon with the catch of the season, Reece chipped the ball over the Australian who doubled back and caught the ball, but it fell from his hands as he hit the deck, it would have been a stunning catch.

Luis Reece's innings came to a close in the 35th over when trying to push the scoring along he top-edged to Dan Redfern, Reece's stubborn resistance was 59 off 63 balls, which included three fours and two sixes.

Derbyshire wrapped up the win, when Querl and Woolley were bowled by Groenewald and Park respectively and Mark Turner (4-54) clean bowled Steven Cheetham to give the Falcons victory by 35 runs.

Centurion Khawaja said post match "We've got a lot of cricket to come, I enjoyed myself today, it's a very scenic ground and I felt really comfortable. I think half the town came out as well which is good for the festival. Chesney and I started really well and we fell away at the end, we felt 260 would be good, but we kept losing wickets."
