Saturday 30th November witnessed a double victory for the Panthers' 1st and 2nd XV teams on home turf - in excess of 40 players pulled on the shirts, each putting clear points distance between them and their opposition.

Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV faced Worksop RUFC, who currently sit seventh in the league, behind Panthers' who are in second place.

Determined to hang on to their lead and pushing for promotion, Panthers dominated the game against Worksop, although not from the offset.

Had they shown the grit and determination on the pitch at the beginning of the game that they showed in the second part of the first half, an additional four tries would have been there for the taking.

Panthers started the game slowly and with a lack of direction but, once they got their heads in gear, the outcome was never in doubt, with first half tries from Nick Fenton (above), Luke Holt, the ever dependable Paul Jones and a brace for Glenn Grayson, who also added two conversions.

Praise to Worksop's kicker however, who had a fantastic range and scored two penalties.

By half time, Panthers were already well in front.

A brace of injuries in the second half could have disrupted the Panthers' momentum, but the replacements stepped up to the mark immediately, Mark (Stumpy) Coward excelling on the pitch from the off.

The game had real pace with the Panthers showing spirit, drive and camaraderie combined on the pitch, to roll over the opposition and deliver tries from Jordan Grayson, two more from Glenn Grayson and the final one from Ty Rose. Grayson also added two conversions.

Captain Steve Avenier, who was on the subs bench following his recent return from injury, said: "Although not playing from the start, sitting on the bench gave me the opportunity to see for myself what a force the team is on the pitch.

"We are strong and focussed on promotion."

Avenier praised forward Andy Hughes (left), and highlighted the strength of the backs. He added: "The backs were so tight, they enabled Nick Fenton to edge it over to Liam Alford. Normally a running back always grabs the limelight, but Liam's defence and organisation of the back line was brilliant."
