Tuesday 25th March 2014

Cleethorpes 1st XV 5 - 11 Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV
Midlands 4 East (North) League
Saturday 22nd March 2014

Chesterfield travelled to Cleethorpes on a coach trip with their barmy army of fans - who outnumbered the home team's supporters - and created a great atmosphere for the Panthers. Chesterfield travelled to Cleethorpes on a coach trip with their barmy army of fans - who outnumbered the home team's supporters - and created a great atmosphere for the Panthers.

A hard ground in windy conditions didn't make for a great spectacle of game.

But - a win is a win - and Panthers were happy to take their 15th consecutive victory.

Under horrible conditions, the game was very scrappy from the off for both sides. In spite of having most of the possession however, Chesterfield failed to finish off some well worked set pieces from the forwards.

After several offside penalties against Cleethorpes, it was time to put points on the board. Chris 'Bjorn' Ward converted two consecutive penalties to give Chesterfield a 0 - 6 lead at the half time whistle.

HT: 0-6

The first try of the match came in the second half, thanks to Super Sub Big Joe WaltonThe second half was pretty much the same as the first - but with the weather conditions in favour of Cleethorpes - and they used the conditions to their advantage with an early penalty to take the game to 3 - 6.

The first try of the match came in the second half, thanks to Super Sub Big Joe Walton, (left), who came on for a line out.

A 30 metre drive from the forwards saw Chris Windle run over for a fantastic try under the posts.

It was a double celebration for Windle, it being his first try in eight years! Unfortunately, Chris Ward slipped and sliced the ball from under the posts to miss converting the try, which earned him a club fine!

Cleethorpes to their credit never gave up and, despite excellent defending, they managed to slot a 50 metre penalty bringing a nervy last 10 minutes.

FT: 5-11

Club Captain Steven Avenier said after the match: "It wasn't our greatest 80 minutes but we did what we had to do in very tough conditions.

"We knew it was going to be tough at Cleethorpes and from the off, all we needed to do was concentrate solely on just winning the game at all costs."
