Chesterfield returned to winning ways after being held to a draw at Amber Valley two weeks ago, even without several key players, including the majestic Tom Rice, Panthers still fielded a strong squad.Ashfield posed a serious threat as the only team to have beaten Amber Valley so far this season.

Conditions were far from ideal with strong winds blowing across the pitch, which made both handling and kicking difficult. This would once again play into the hands of the opponents who favoured a more forward orientated game plan.

Panthers started the game with an immediate dominance, playing a much tighter game than usual with good initial carries from Luke Holt and Rob Davidson breaking the gain-line and giving Panthers excellent field position.

Playing out of position at fly-half, Chris Ward was able to make a break in front of the posts and speedy work at the breakdown by Chesterfield allowed Alex Allen to go under the posts to open the scoring. Glenn Grayson slotted the conversion to make the lead 7-0.

After some good defensive work by Panthers and some slick counter-attacking running from Glenn Grayson, Chesterfield once again pressurised Ashfield in their own half, leading to a series of penalties. With kicking near on impossible, both teams opted to take quick penalties.

With Chesterfield 15 metres out from the Ashfield line, it was Chris Ward's quick thinking that was rewarded - catching Ashfield by surprise - and after brushing off three defenders, he crossed for Panthers' second try close to the posts. In the windy conditions Glenn Grayson was unable to add the extras.

Further breaks by Luke Holt and Jordan Grayson into the opponents' half were snuffed out by a quick thinking Ashfield defense.

Ashfield, to their credit, pushed Panthers back into their own half where they spent the remainder of the first half defending repeated attacks following handling mistakes in the difficult conditions.

Chris Windle led by example, putting several thumping hits in to keep Ashfield at bay.

HT: Chesterfield 12 Ashfield 0

The second half gave Chesterfield a marginal advantage with the wind, yet it was Ashfield who had the majority of the ball - but failed to build on any field position, with good defensive work, once again by the home side's backs, causing several mistakes and turning the ball over.

Ashfield's frustration was clear to see and the resulting incidents only highlighted their inability to match up to Chesterfield's physicality.

With Chesterfield pinned on their own goal line following a series of penalties, Terry Titley received some questionable use of the boot to the head.

The tone of the game began to change and this was followed by another incident with Chris Ward receiving several blows to the face which, unfortunately were missed again, by the referee.

This only served to fuel Panthers' desire to nail the visitors and, following an outstanding goal line stand, the game finished without Chesterfield conceding a point.
