Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane? No, It's A Cancer Charity Fundraising Event

Sunday 30th June 2013

Anyone passing Chesterfield Town Hall on Saturday morning would have been forgiven for thinking George Clooney et al had motored into town to begin filming 'Oceans 14' in 'CHEZ' rather than 'LAS' Vegas, as 30 brave (or mad) individuals - including the Mayoress - attached themselves to rope and levered themselves down the side of the iconic building.

It was all in a good cause though, as staff from Chesterfield Borough Council and their partners Arvato took part in the Charity Abseil to raise money for two cancer charities.

Organiser Peter Schriewersmann said he was very proud of staff of both teams as he explained how the event came aboutOrganiser Peter Schriewersmann (left) said he was very proud of staff of both teams as he explained how the event came about, "Chesterfield Council workers have supported cancer research because of the personal circumstances of one of their colleagues - and our staff have a charity of the year - and this year, it's Bluebell Wood.

"So working together, we thought we'd do this for two very worthwhile causes. This is just one way we work in partnership and look around - there are so many people enjoying themselves here!

"The TA and the Air Cadets along with CBC and Arvato helped - they all gave spare time to do a lot of extra bits to make it a nice day, so I'm very proud."

He was devastated not to be taking part himself, "I'm not a particularly good footballer and I broke my elbow playing, so unfortunately, I can't do it. Hopefully I'll do it next year!"

Funds raised would all be going to the causes, said Peter, "Arvato has paid the money to the abseil company, so all money raised goes straight to the charity, not a penny goes to anything but the charity and the council has sponsored time, in terms of heath and safety and the caretaking time, so that the charity gets the full amount - hopefully a few thousand pounds."

Given that very nervous faces in hard hats were still peering over the parapet
pre -jump as we spoke, Peter was very cagey about admitting who had the idea for the event, "Well … I like abseiling myself, maybe I kicked it all off but there were a lot of people who got excited about it very quickly and then we had to overcome all the health and safety hurdles.

"But I knew it was done in the past and I knew it would attract lots of attention as it's a fantastic building and Chesterfield people have come along to support us. We were very surprised that the Mayoress came forward to do it but she did a good job - she was one of the pro's it seems!"

The Chesterfield Post spoke with the Mayoress before she leapt from the top of the building and she admitted she was delighted but nervous, "I'm terrified, I don't like heights for a start but it's five minutes out of my life to help someone else's so that's the way I'm looking at it!

"I happened to hear someone talking about it and said that I wouldn't mind having a go and then my neighbour came round and said 'oh I hear you're going to jump off the town hall' and that was it - no turning back!"

Cllr Graham King prepares to jump! She remained upbeat as she considered the jump ahead, "I'll be OK when I get over the edge - I have raised a few hundred pounds and half will go to Cancer Research and the other half raised will go to the bus at Weston Park."

As Peter had alluded, one lady watching from the car park had every reason to be proud of the participants.

Amanda Walker, a council worker, had been recentlty diagnosed with ovarian cancer for which she is still receiving treatment.

A hugely popular lady, who was spoken of with much affection on the day, colleagues said they were determined to raise money for Cancer Research to help people like Amanda recover and receive treatment more quickly.

The lady herself admitted to The Chesterfield Post how proud she was of her colleagues, "Absolutely - it's a terrific thing to do and a great cause which will affect most of us at some stage in our lives - ether personally or friends and family.

"I was diagnosed mid-January and am going through treatment at the moment. I probably look better than I am as the type of chemotherapy I've been on hasn't made me lose my hair, but it's still not vey pleasant and colleagues have been very supportive and sent me lots of good wishes which was great.

"I'm very proud of them - it's a good cause and I'm proud to support it. One of our daughters did Race For Life here the other week - it all helps!"
