AFC Wimbledon 1 - 0 Chesterfield FC. Match Report

Sunday 19th August 2012
by HOWARD BORRELL

The weather was positively Mediterranean in Kingston-upon-Thames for the start of the Spireites' League Two campaign.

The team sported a brand new black and gold kit that for thirty minutes, had them carving through the Wombles' defence as if they were performing to the dance music of the same name! Then - completely against the run of play - Wimbledon scored. The Spireites failed to pick up the same tempo and were left rueing "what might have been."

AFC Wimbledon 1 - 0 Chesterfield FC. Match ReportEven AFC Wimbledon's Manager, Terry Brown, couldn't deny it saying, "We got battered for about half an hour, they ran us ragged, but we nicked a goal after about 35 minutes and then the game changed."

Chesterfield boss John Sheridan (left) admitted "We should have scored four goals in the first 15-20 minutes. We played really well and opened them up for fun, but we just didn't take our chances."

The failure to capitalise on their early dominance cost Chesterfield the three points and it's now vital that we see a more ruthless streak in front of goal.

The Spireites' boss made two changes to the starting line-up and brought in both Mark Randall and Jordan Bowery at the expense of Mark Allott and Craig Westcarr.

The team started like an express train and only a mixture of solid defence and weak finishing kept the home side level. Marc Richards blasted narrowly wide after ten minutes and Drew Talbot could have had an early hat-trick with his best effort, on 21 minutes, producing a superb save from home keeper, Seb Brown, who was later voted the Man of the Match.

The impressive Angus McDonald spotted an opening and launched an inch-perfect long ball for last season's League Two joint-top goal scorer, Jack Midson. The 28 year old didn't hesitate, took the ball cleanly, advanced and powered home confidently to Tommy Lee's left.

The Spireites battled away and Warren Cummings ensured the home side edged it at the interval after he cleared Jordan Bowery's goal bound effort off the line on 44 minutes.

The second period proved to be an anti-climax. Wimbledon had a lead to defend and the Spireites had to adapt their approach and be more incisive; instead the home side maintained their grip on the contest and saw the game out quite comfortably.

A bizarre episode late in the game gave both teams time for a cooling drink after the sprinklers suddenly sprang into life; moments later, Sam Hird, boosted by his refreshment, produced Chesterfield's best endeavour of the half after making a run from his own half and shrugging off two challenges. His shot from 35 yards summed up the afternoon - close but not close enough!

John Sheridan told it as it was after the game and admitted "We didn't create openings in the second half like we did in the first twenty minutes; creating and taking chances are two different things; we should have got three points - but we didn't."

With more possession and eleven shots on target at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, the Spireites need to find that clinical edge for the crucial next test on Tuesday night when John Coleman brings his battling Rochdale side, who also failed to score at the weekend, to the Proact Stadium.

Maybe it was never to be our day as we've failed to win whenever Gavin Ward has officiated a Chesterfield game and last season, when he last took control of a Spireites' game, we bombed 6-2 at MK Dons - ironically the club that remains the nemesis of AFC Wimbledon.
