Staveley Extend Unbeaten Run To Six With Draw At Brighouse. Match Report

Tuesday 26th November 2013

Report by Jim McIntosh

Toolstation NCEL Premier League
Saturday 23rd November, KO 3pm

Brighouse Town 2 - 2 Staveley MWFC

Staveley extended their unbeaten run to six games with two late goals to earn a well deserved point against title-chasing Brighouse Town.

Nick Hague returning from injury and Michael Trench fit enough to start againThe result was all the more creditable as the Welfare had to play the last 30 minutes with ten men following a harsh second yellow card for Pat Lindley.

Indeed, it was a display that was full of team spirit and players throwing their bodies in where it hurt when it really mattered.

Manager Neil Cluxton made two changes to the team that were successful in the FA Vase seven days earlier, with Staveley's Man of the Match, Nick Hague (left), returning from injury and Michael Trench fit enough to start again, James Colliver and Sam Finlaw dropping out.

Staveley had the better of the early exchanges with full back Hague seeing plenty of the ball and attacking down the right wing when given the opportunity.

They won two early corners and the second was expertly flicked on by Matt Thorpe across the six yard box, Hague just unable to get anything on it for what would have been a certain goal.

Hague was again in the action when he was crudely fouled by Brighouses' Daniel Naidole, with what could have been interpreted as a two-footed lunge. Referee Mark Dwyer did not even book the player and this would become a talking point later.

The resulting free kick was taken by Josh Scully, who played in a great ball to Reece Littlejohn, but the forward's header was cleared off the line. At the other end Xavier Parisi saved from the home side's Tom Matthews.

Matt Thorpe then saw his shot go narrowly wide after some good football involving Hague, Littlejohn and Scully.

Almost immediately, Chris Dickman made a good sliding interception to stop a dangerous Brighouse attack. The home side then won a corner and centre back Nick Jagger had a free header that, fortunately for Staveley, was off target.

Brighouse then started to take command of the game and their number seven, Ryan Hall, was particularly causing problems with his excellent movement.

Staveley keeper Xavier Parisi had to be alert to make a good save with his feet from Hall after 25 minutesStaveley keeper Xavier Parisi (left), had to be alert to make a good save with his feet from Hall after 25 minutes. Dickman then did well to block another shot from the same player as Staveley defended with great resilience.

However, the visitors still pressed forward at every opportunity and a quick free kick from Wes Hall set up Littlejohn for a possible run on goal but a covering defender forced the ball out. The resulting corner was met perfectly by Nick Hague but his header was headed off the line and the ball fell to Pat Lindley whose shot was well blocked.

Parisi was then in the action again with two good saves, the first from a Luke Gibson long range shot and then he got down low to his left to push another shot round the post.

As half time approached, Staveley had a penalty appeal waived away as Lindley went down under a challenge in the penalty area.

The first half was very evenly balanced and a good advert for non league football at this level.

HT: 0-0

Xavier Parisi was quickly into action at the beginning of the second half to protect the Staveley goal, as he came off his line to smother a shot from the ever-dangerous Ryan Hall.

Shortly after, Brighouses' Tom Matthews saw a shot fizz wide after Jamie Smith was guilty of giving the ball away. Parisi then used his feet to clear a shot from Ben Thornton.

on 62 minutes, Lindley went in for another midfield challenge, committed what looked like a minor foul and was given a second yellow cardDuring this period, Staveley's Pat Lindley (left), was shown a yellow card for persistent fouling. Lindley is a combative player and his tackling and running gives the side much needed muscle in the midfield area.

There can be few complaints about the booking as he had been warned earlier.

Lindley and Tim Whittaker then showed 110% commitment by throwing their bodies in the way of shots as Brighouse started to dominate the game.

However, on 62 minutes, Lindley went in for another midfield challenge, committed what looked like a minor foul and was given a second yellow card.

As the midfielder left the field, thoughts turned to the challenge by Brighouses' Naidole in the first half which appeared much worse - and went unpunished!

The referee's decision was a key moment and with Staveley less effective in midfield, Brighouse opened the scoring soon after with a soft goal from Ryan Hall, who found himself in on goal, beating Parisi who chose to stay still and upright when he really needed to throw himself at the forward's feet and try and smother the shot.

1-0

The deficit became two goals with a great individual effort by substitute Matthew Waller, whose shot from the edge of the box found the corner of the goal, possibly aided by a deflection.

2-0

Neil Cluxton brought on all three substitutes and re-organised with substitute Ryan Damms going upfront. And it was Damms who won a penalty with six minutes remaining, after he was brought down in the area as he tried to turn a defender. He duly dispatched the penalty which went in off the post.

2-1

In the resulting scramble, a Nick Hague shot was blocked and Reece Littlejohn was able to get the ball over the line.Staveley took full advantage of this lifeline and pressed forward for an equaliser.

This came two minutes later when Jake Vernon was fouled 35 yards from goal.

The resulting free kick was taken by Josh Scully and reached Tim Whittaker whose header was not fully cleared.

In the resulting scramble, a Nick Hague shot was blocked and Reece Littlejohn (left), was able to get the ball over the line and bring the scores level.

2-2

The referee played four minutes of extra time but the team held firm, to the delight of their management team and travelling supporters.

FT: 2-2

The draw was no less than they deserved and you do wonder what the final result may have been if the sending off had not occurred.

Staveley go again on tomorrow night (Wednesday, 27th November), at home to Liversedge. Let's see if they can make it 7 unbeaten!
