Staveley MWFC Avoid Defeat After 'Biblical' Downpour Stops Game

Friday 20th December 2013

by Jim McIntosh

Toolstation NCEL League, Premier Division
Wednesday 18th December, KO 7:45pm

Staveley MWFC A - A Albion Sports

Staveley MWFC's match against Albion Sports at Inkersall Road on Wednesday evening was abandoned after 62 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch after a torrential downpour, with Staveley trailing 4-1 at the time. The result does not stand and the match will be rescheduled for another date.

Staveley
were hit with suspensions with the following unavailable: Pat Lindley (4 games), James Colliver (3 games) and Jamie Smith and Reece Littlejohn (one game each), these suspensions will now take effect from the club's next match.

The predicted bad weather arrived in Staveley at around 6.45pm. By the time the game started, the rain was falling steadily. During the first half the water started to form puddles on the pitch and this, together with a strong wind, made for very difficult playing conditions.

Staveley opened the scoring after eight minutes when Ollie Ryan played a square ball on the edge of the box to Matt Thorpe and the latter scored with a great finish. Staveley opened the scoring after eight minutes when Ollie Ryan played a square ball on the edge of the box to Matt Thorpe (left), and the latter scored with a great finish.

1-0

However, the lead only lasted 4 minutes when Liam Ormsby scored from the edge of the box with a well placed shot.

1-1

The visitors adapted their game to the difficult conditions and avoided playing too much football on a difficult, slippery surface.

The conditions had a part to play in the second goal after 25 minutes when Alex Cusack scored from close range with defenders slipping all over the place.

1-2

The visitors dominated the rest of the half and Staveley were forced to defend desperately at times.

Goalkeeper Chris Butt made three good saves, the best on 42 minutes when he dived full length to keep out a shot that was heading into the top right hand corner of the net.Goalkeeper Chris Butt (left), made three good saves, the best on 42 minutes when he dived full length to keep out a shot that was heading into the top right hand corner of the net.

The save impressed both the crowd and also one of the Albion Sports players who congratulated the young keeper on the save.

Wes Hill also deserves a mention in dispatches, for a goal line clearance and for putting his body on the line at one point to block a shot. Definite evidence of 100% commitment.

HT: 1-2

The referee, Richard Woodward, was asked to consider abandoning the game at half time but he felt the pitch was still playable.

However, by this time, a significant area of water was lying on the pitch in the top left hand corner.

During the second half there was the farcical sight of an Albion player taking a corner with the ball half covered by water.

For the record, Albion Sports scored twice through Danny Facey and Bradley Riley after 46 and 51 minutes, the latter a quality solo goal.

Shortly after, the rain came down in biblical proportions for several minutes, making it very difficult to see the action on the pitch from the stand behind the goal. At this point (62 minutes) the referee abandoned the game.

For information although none of the following will count towards the formal records...

STAVELEY:
Chris Butt, Chris Dickman, Michael Trench (Tom Mullen, 46), Wes Hill (c),
