Burton Have The Blues
Match Preview

Thursday 10th February 2011

BURTON ALBION v CHESTERFIELD, FRIDAY 11th, KO 7:45pm

Burton Albion certainly have the Indian sign over the Spireites this season. The Brewers inflicted Chesterfield's first league defeat at the B2net Stadium and followed that up by knocking the Spireites out of the FA Cup at the 2nd Round stage.

This is in sharp contrast to the form shown against the Brewers last season when two wins and a draw was enough to stop the East Staffordshire side's challenge.

Burton have quite a few games in hand and haven't played at the Pirelli Stadium in the league since New Years Day when they drew 0-0 with Shrewsbury Town.

They defeated Middlesbrough in the FA Cup 3rd round before succumbing to defeat at Burnley in the 4th.

In the league Burton are an alarming 23rd place, but with an amazing 8 games in hand over certain sides.

The Brewers haven't won in the league since 11th December.

Their top goalscorers Shaun Harrad and James Collins (who was on loan from Aston Villa) had scored 17 goals between them but have now left the club. Harrad was signed by Northampton for £50,000, it was felt that Albion needed to cashed in now as he would have been able to leave for free in the summer.

Collins who has been a bit of a thorn in the Chesterfield side with two goals in his two matches against them for the Brewers, opted not to sign an extended loan at the Pirelli and Shrewsbury nipped in and signed the striker from Villa Park.

This of course left Albion a little light in the attack department and Manager Paul Peschisolido moved swiftly to sign Tranmere and Oldham striker Calvin Zola who had fallen out of favour at Crewe. The Brewers have just announced the signing of striker Sam Winnell on loan from Wolves.

Chesterfield currently are ten matches unbeaten with five wins and five draws from this sequence.

The Spireites have four away matches on the bounce starting with the trip to the Pirelli Stadium on Friday.

Three consecutive draws have brought everyone back down to earth, so the focus must be to continue the good run towards the business end of the season.

Shrewsbury Manager Graham Turner has stated his intentions this season stating "We are aiming for the title, Chesterfield can still be caught and we are expected them to 'do a Rochdale' ".

The Dale last season fell from grace towards the end of the season which denied them the League Two title, however the Spotland side still got promoted whilst Notts County pipped them for the awards.

Chesterfield have announced that defender Aaron Downes is to miss the rest of the season. The Australian U23 international has not played since February 2010, and has been advised to have a further operation on his knee, just to tidy matters.

Manager John Sheridan has stated that "He has his leg in a brace at the moment and we will reassess in the summer, it's a blow to him as he has been training with us but hopefully it will make him stronger".

Dean Morgan remains a couple of weeks away from contention with a foot injury. It is felt that Gregor Robertson and Simon Ford are available for selection to bolster the squad.
