Bridlington Town 1-1 Staveley MWFC
Queensgate, Saturday 10th January 2015, 3pm

The impressive and ever loyal support shown by Staveley Miners Welfare fans in recent seasons was in evidence yet again on Saturday, as a coach load of them set off from Inkersall Road and headed east to Queensgate, home of Bridlington Town, in pursuit of their teams 12th win in a row and 3 more precious points.

The teams entered the field of play accompanied by a piper who was apparently signifying Bridlington's first home game of 2015 and there was also an impeccably observed minutes silence, to mark the sad passing last week, of a long standing, popular and stalwart Bridlington Town supporter, Steve Woodrow.

Staveley kicked off towards the open end of the ground, clad in all yellow, on a blustery and bitterly cold afternoon and saw plenty of the ball early in the early exchanges.

The ever present Sam Finlaw was pulling the strings in midfield and was ably assisted by fellow Staveley academy 'graduate', Ross Goodwin.

The first sniff of goal fell to another academy product, Kurtis Morley on 10 minutes. Jordan Hodder received a pass from Ellis Wall, clipped the ball over the defence which would have fallen nicely for Morley had Bridlington's goalkeeper, James Hitchcock, not rushed to the edge of his area to collect the ball, which was to become a feature of the game, as the overstretched keeper combined his duties with a sweepers role while his back-line defended too far up the pitch.

15 minutes in and Kurtis Morley again jinked his way to and fro get the better of Brid left back Danny Brunton and got his cross in - but there was no one in the box to get on the end of it.

It was pretty much all Staveley at this point.

Ellis Wall's long range effort stung the hand of keeper Hitchcock, who conceded a corner, which produced a bit of a goal mouth scramble but it came to no avail.

Kurtis Morley was put through by a nice flick from Jordan Hodder, but as the Staveley forward tried to chip Hitchcock, who was again in no mans land, his strike just looped over the far post.

Staveley's 'move of the match' came on 19 minutes; a slick one touch passing move between Ellis Wall and Jahmal Smith put Kurtis Morley into a dangerous position on the left hand side, he also touched the ball just the once, centring for Wall who showed great determination to get on the end of it, but fired the ball narrowly over.

Bridlington were forced into a change and centre back Ryan Nicholls was replaced by Jarrod Smalley and Alex Knaggs took over in defence - and although Staveley were having the lion's share of the ball, they did create a few half chances, the pick of which was an acrobatic overhead kick from number 9 Obemi Ruhanduka although Steven Hernandez saved comfortably.

Just before halftime, Brid's 'Sweeper Keeper' tactic nearly proved to be their undoing.

Again, James Hitchcock was on the very limits of his area, only to be closed down by Jordan Hodder, another of Staveley's 'young guns', who knocked the ball passed the seemingly stranded Hitchcock but he dived backwards and managed to smother the danger.

There was still time to get the goal that Staveley's attacking play had merited, a pass following a burst upfield from Sam Finlaw found Kurtis Morley who forced the Seasiders into conceding a corner, Ross Goodwin timed his run and met the corner at the far post, but headed just over.

Morley himself had arguably the best chance of the half, but fired into the side netting after dancing past his marker following a long pass from Goodwin.

The sun disappeared but, the biting wind was here to stay and it assisted Will Waudley's cross/shot which looped towards Steven Hernandez's goal, who had to make sure it was staying out by palming the ball over the bar and out for a corner.

The ball was soon back in his hands though and he started another Staveley attack via Brad Jones, this time who found Jahmal Smith, who in turn battled well and won a corner - but it came to nothing.



It did look like the uncertainty between Bridlington's keeper and his defence was going to be the best opportunity to strike but it was to be the Seasiders themselves who benefited from a similar situation at the other end. When an under-hit back pass put Steven Hernandez under pressure from Obemi Ruhanduka. Both the forward and keeper got to the ball at the same time, but, unfortunately for Staveley it was Brid's number 9 who came away with the ball and ran on to knock it into an empty net to put the home side in front on 64 minutes

You don't win 11 games on the bounce however without having something about you and a bit extra in your tank - and Staveley immediately set about trying to get back into the game.

Michael Trench came on for Jordan Hodder and went out onto the left, with Ellis Wall switching flanks try his luck down the right and he won a series of corners which were dealt with by the home side's defence.

But, when pushing for an equaliser and committing men forward, you are susceptible to getting it on the break ... and with 20 minutes to go, the game was nearly put beyond Staveley, when that man Ruhanduka again, showed why he is so highly rated in NCEL circles, when he made himself the space and time to get his shot away, but he rattled the crossbar with a wind assisted 20 yard drive.

With 10 minutes left, Jack Watts came on for Kurtis Morley and almost immediately put Jahmal Smith (left), in with a great through ball, which unfortunately hit the back of Smiths foot and the chance was lost.

Smith was not to be denied his 12th goal of the season however as he took another through ball, this time from Ellis Wall in his stride and fired the ball low into the far corner, to keep his impressive run going of having now scored in 8 consecutive games.

With five minutes still left to play was there time to make it 12 wins from 12?

Well yes, though there was, Staveley had to settle for a point, but though they might rue not turning possession into goals during the opening 45 minutes, one could also say that it was also a point gained in the second half, thanks in no small part to Steven Hernandez, who produced at least 4 top drawer saves and a defensive masterclass shift put in by man of the match Damien Magee in the closing stages.

So the impressive sequence of consecutive league wins comes to an end, but the unbeaten run continues and there were no disappointed Staveley faces on the bus back home. The Welfare don't usually fare well up at Queensgate and on their day, Bridlington Town can go toe to toe with most of the big hitters in this league.

Excellent performance in far from ideal conditions and the draw was just about the right result.
