Working For The Local Community

Tuesday 1st March 2011

Police say that calls about nuisance behaviour have dropped 'dramatically' just one month after a dispersal order was granted in Pilsley.

The order, which came into force on 31st January 2011 and will be in place for six months, gives police extra powers to break up groups of two or more people they believe could go on to cause trouble.

After just four weeks of having the order in place police have already seen calls drop by two thirds - from an average of 21 per month in the three months prior to its implementation to just seven during February.

Residents and local business owners in the North East Derbyshire village have given feedback to officers to say there has been a big improvement in the community and that they feel much safer at night.

The order is a discretionary power to allow officers to move on groups who they believe may go on to cause anti-social behaviour. It also allows the police to take a young person home if they are under 16 years old and unsupervised in a public place. If they return to the same place within 24 hours they can be arrested and prosecuted.

Inspector Michelle Shooter, who is in charge of policing across NE Derbyshire, said: "The dispersal order provides my officers and staff with an effective tool to deal positively with any reported groups, in and around Pilsley, who are causing or likely to cause anti social behaviour.

"Clear instructions are provided to the group, who may be arrested if they refuse or fail to comply with the request. It is a positive tool to prevent anti-social behaviour before it occurs and is so far proving successful."

The dispersal order will remain in place until July 31st when it will be reviewed.

Further information can be found on the Derbyshire Constabulary website www.derbyshire.police.uk or by calling 0345 123 3333.
