On Cloud Nine!
Bradford 0 - 1 Chesterfield

Wednesday 23rd February 2011
by PAUL FISHER

Chesterfield won at Bradford for the first time in seven years and condemned Peter Taylor to his first defeat against a Chesterfield side when he has been manager at his previous clubs.

Deane Smalley scored the games only goal and kept up his good run of form with six goals in his last seven matches and eight in total.

Chesterfield made just the one change with Deane Smalley coming back into the side following his suspension for one game after his sending off against Bury forced him to miss the game at Lincoln on Saturday. Simon Ford was replaced by the Oldham loanee, as he was taken off early at Sincil Bank. Drew Talbot kept up his right back berth and also kept hold of the captain's armband.

Bradford went with three upfront, former Spireite target Kevin Ellison partnered Gareth Evans and Scott Dobie.

Chesterfield started brightly as in recent weeks, and went close through Deane Smalley and also Ian Morris who fired wide from distance.

The Spireites then found the breakthrough with a sublime pass from Kieran Djilali, he fed Smalley to right hand side and the on form striker fired past Lenny Pidgeley to give the Spireites the lead.

Crosses from the left proved a problem for the Bantams and a particular one from Gregor Robertson whipped across goal where no Chesterfield player could get onto the end of it.

A flick from Davies saw Djilali in space at the back post but he chose to shoot first time which perhaps on second thought he could of took the ball further and Pidgeley saved.

In the second half and a ball fired across goal by Smalley again missed everyone in the box and missed the far post.

Bradford then upped tempo and put a lot of pressure on the back four of the Spireites. James Hanson scorer at the B2net came on as sub and was used as a target as Bradford decided to go route one.

One of Hanson's knock downs fell kindly to Jake Speight who fired over with his back to goal. Speight again had an opportunity but his effort this time went over the bar.

The Spireites had managed to keep the 10,000 plus crowd quiet and the added on time was lost for City as Chesterfield went over the 60 point barrier and 9 points clear at the top.

QUOTES:

Chesterfield Manager John Sheridan
:
"I want to praise the players, we've only lost one in fourteen, I knew we weren't playing well. We defended well especially in the last ten minutes when they had their spell. We had good chances to kill the game off and we defended well and it's full credit to the players."

Bradford City manager Peter Taylor:
"I felt we deserved something from the match, the pressure we put on there defence at the end and chances we had felt that we should have got a draw if not a win."

On a tragically sad note, the Chesterfield Post understands a Spireite supporter had a fatal heart attack prior to the start of the game. Our thoughts are with the supporter's family.
