Chesterfield Secondary School Is 'Making Life Better When It Counts'

Thursday 25th June 2015

A Chesterfield secondary school has begun a pilot scheme that will see 15 year olds step outside the curriculum and learn skills that will stretch their creativity and confidence - and begin to see them prepare for life outside school and in the real world.

A Chesterfield secondary school has begun a pilot scheme that will see 15 year olds step outside the curriculum and learn skills that will stretch their creativity and confidence - and begin to see them prepare for life outside school and in the real world.

The Hidden Talents
programme has been designed by former Performing Arts lecturer Chris Collard, and is being implemented by Whittington Green School at Old Whittington - where Y10's have, this week, left the lessons behind, and chosen one of five disciplines to study for five days.

These include songwriting, computer gaming, musical theatre, business enterprise and coaching and leadership.

It's proven to be a huge community effort too, with organisations taking part including Chesterfield Football Club's Community Trust and Chesterfield College.

Two years of work have gone into the planning of the programme says Chris Collard who spoke to The Chesterfield Post, but he feels it was worth it, explaining, "When I was in a different life, I went to a NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) conference in London and it sparked me off - what can we do for kids who miss out?

"I'm also a performing arts inspector for exams and I was in Smethwick watching some girls dance, the standard was incredible and I thought if you could keep some of those kids off the street and dancing and from getting pregnant, doing drugs, if we can offer something in schools because a lot of clubs are unable to be funded, a lot of parents can't afford to pay for ballet and sport and Local Authority's are restricting those kind of activities - If we can put it in schools, kids will have something they love and they can polish and they have something to fall back on when times are tough.

"That's basically the premise - that it will make their lives better when it counts!

"This is the pilot - the governors of the school have voted to put this on the timetable so, over the summer, I have to set up getting volunteers from the community.

"Funding's difficult (but we may be able to do expenses) - but we hope to attract maybe retired people who have lots to offer, so next year we can offer year 10's engineering, arts, sport. We can't do everything for everyone but we can get close. As soon as we can, it will be on the timetable for one period every two weeks.

"Education is all exam driven which is a shame. Even music lessons, there is such a pressure to get exam things finished, that's what this eradicates. What they've come up with is amazing. There are some talented pupils here. You put a little bit in and what comes out is massive!"

Having walked around the classrooms and seeing the students at work, it's clear that engagement levels are high.

Benjamin Cutts was in the coaching group and he spoke to The Chesterfield Post, saying, "It's bringing out my leadership skills, I wanted to do this because it's sport and I love sport. I'm very confident in leading now, I have learned to operate as part of a team and I have talked to loads of people I haven't met before. It's valuable to help with confidence and skills for later life!"

Rebecca Wilkinson was taking part in the business skills workshop, "It's been fun and different to what we'd do in school. This develops skills that you'll need when you leave school - how to manage money and organise things that I'll have to do one day. I have learned that I can do more things to sort problems out that I actually thought I could. It will help me do lessons too - the skills I've learned I can use in life - but also in my lessons. You get to meet people in the year that you wouldn't normally acknowledge, you get to meet them and make brilliant friends!"

Joanna Leaver had picked the songwriting workshop for her week and, only three days in, had with her partner, produced a song which could be marketed commercially (we had a sneak preview), and says that for her it was a no brainer which she was thoroughly enjoying, "I've had music lessons before and I have performed in front of assemblies. I song write in my spare time and this has been useful.

"It's given me an idea on how I can develop my work. I have got more confident and learned how to use my voice and harmonise. I'm with completely different people to my lessons and it's been good to meet them!"

Computer gaming had proven popular, with William Bargh trying his hand at something he may love to do in the future, "We're learning how to create 2D games and how to programme. I've learned a lot. I can code and create 2D games. It's much more fun than Maths and English lessons!"

Millie Walters, in the performing arts group, perhaps encapsulates more than most what this programme is about. Having never performed on stage before - or had any desire to - she now finds herself enjoying the class, "I'm in drama, we're doing a play on Shrek, we've organised a dance and we're just starting our routines.

"I probably wouldn't have gone on stage or sung and I've done both, so it's brought up my confidence a lot. We have to perform this at the end of the week. I didn't think I could sing but apparently I can, so I have got that out of it!"

Helen Lewin is Assistant Head and has been instrumental in implementing the programme in school.

She says she is thrilled with the way pupils have engaged with the project, "What you will see today is young people who have chosen a range of skills from musical theatre to developing enterprise skills as a way of broadening experiences outside of the usual curriculum.

"I think it's important for all children - the skills they are developing are important in life. Of course they need Maths and English - but they also need confidence, group skills and planning, financial skills, creativity and imagination!

"The programme is the brainchild of Chris Collard and he is committed to enabling young people to reach their potential.

"It's a trial over the 8 hours, of specialist input and to give them a range of experiences. It's a huge community effort - Chesterfield College has been great. That's the great thing about working in education - everyone pulls together and something good comes out of it at the end. It's also great to bring new people in to schools as these people come in with different ideas to school and teachers.

"These children will be going out to do work experience soon and we have done a lot of work with our year 10's this year to help raise aspirations and get them clued up about where this is going, as we know there are challenging times for young people out there at the moment and, though they don't need to make any decisions about what they want to do right now, they do need a good plan for what they are going to do after their GCSE's.

"Anything that allows them to think 'Oh, I may be good at that!' and which opens up as many options as possible, can only be a good thing!"
